data-cycle-paused="true" data-cycle-prev="" data-cycle-next="" data-cycle-pager="" data-cycle-pager-template=" " data-cycle-speed="750" About two years ago, animal welfare workers Berta and her puppies were found on the street. Berta had a serious injury on her leg, making it difficult for her to walk properly. After capturing the dogs, the drama only came to light. Berta had likely been in an accident, sustaining severe leg injuries, and the infection had caused the bone to "faulth" down to the marrow. After a thorough diagnosis, the animal welfare workers had to decide on amputation, as Berta's life was hanging by a thread. How she survived and even gave birth to puppies during this time was a mystery. Her pain must have been unbearable, yet she still cared tenderly for her little ones. Under the care of the animal welfare workers, she recovered, and soon a wonderful home was found for the two girls of Berta. And so, Berta and her son Laiko came to a kennel facility. The animal welfare workers initially visited Berta and her son regularly, but unfortunately, they had to leave the country, leaving Berta and Laiko safe and well-provided for, but without human proximity and affection. A few months ago, our Regina learned of this and with more active animal advocates in Moldova, we want to improve the lives of the two. They should simply find a connection with people, be re-socialized, and have a chance at a life in a loving family. We want to bring them to Casa Katharina, build them their own kennel, as we cannot integrate them into existing packs, and Berta, with her handicap, would also be a target for bullying. Finally, after almost two years of just being "stored," we want to give them a life with a future. Laiko will be neutered as soon as possible, and then our girls Natasha and Marina will take care of getting them hand-tame again. We will also continue to accompany and share the story of these two fur babies, because they simply cannot be forgotten, especially not Berta after her serious injury, who had already endured enough, and now should finally be on the sunny side of life. 26.01.14: Our diligent helpers are very busy with Berta and Laiko, just like Victor, they receive daily visits, and Berta is already showing small signs that she would like to have contact…. Laiko unfortunately passed away! Patin found.

About Berta (w)

What life with Berta (w) looks like

Berta (w) is a small young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tiernothilfe Casa Katharina e.V. in Nürnberg.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Berta (w), answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Berta (w)?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tiernothilfe Casa Katharina e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Berta (w) on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Berta (w) if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tiernothilfe Casa Katharina e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Berta (w) already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Berta (w) isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tiernothilfe Casa Katharina e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Berta (w) and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
