Bertie

Mixed Breed · Male · Baby · 10 months

Bertie is a handsome entire male guinea pig looking for a loving forever home where he can continue to grow in confidence. He can be a little shy when meeting new people, but with patience and a gentle approach, you'll soon discover what a lovely little character he is.Once Bertie gets to know you, he becomes much more relaxed and will happily "chat" away, greeting you with his adorable guinea pig squeaks and letting you know when it's time for food!Like many guinea pigs, Bertie isn't a fan of being picked up, but once he's safely settled on your lap, he enjoys gentle strokes and is content to sit with you while you spend some quiet time together.Bertie is a big foodie and absolutely loves his fresh vegetables. He'll always be first in line when he hears the rustle of a food bag, and he never says no to the occasional healthy sweet treat!Bertie is currently living in an indoor enclosure and is well settled as a house guinea pig. He could be gradually acclimatised to outdoor living during the warmer months if his new owners wished, but he would be happiest being brought back indoors during the colder months to keep him warm and comfortable.Bertie is looking for a home where he can be carefully bonded with another friendly male guinea pig or a neutered female, as guinea pigs are social animals and thrive with the companionship of their own kind. He would benefit from patient introductions to help him build a happy and lasting friendship. If you're looking for a sweet boy who just needs a little time and patience to come out of his shell, Bertie could be the perfect addition to your family. About Bertie

What life with Bertie looks like

Bertie is a large puppy/kitten mixed breed rabbit waiting at National Animal Welfare Trust in Watford.

Rabbits are social animals — most shelters recommend adopting them in bonded pairs rather than alone. They need fresh hay daily, several hours of out-of-cage time, and rabbit-safe spaces to explore. They live eight to twelve years, longer than many people expect.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Bertie, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Bertie?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. National Animal Welfare Trust handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Bertie on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Bertie if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — National Animal Welfare Trust will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Bertie already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most rabbits on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Bertie isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with National Animal Welfare Trust early rather than rehoming privately; they know Bertie and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
