Bess

Mixed Breed · Female · Young · 1 year

Bess. 🐾 I may not show it anymore, but I've had a tough start in life. I was just three months old when I and my sister Merle were tied to a pole with shoelaces and left behind. The laces were so short we could barely move. If we tried to sit or change position, they cut off our air supply. We waited two long days before someone finally found us. We were left in a state animal shelter in Romania, skin and bones. Luckily, the Romanian colleagues of the Landshut County Animal Welfare Association - Cats & Dogs in Need took notice of us and rescued us. Since then, we've been safe with them. And then something we'd been waiting for so long happened: we were allowed to travel to Germany ❤️ Now I'm here and I'm finally looking for my own home. I'm a friendly and gentle dog. Once I get to know people and trust them, I enjoy attention and pets very much. I already walk nicely on a leash. But I'm very reserved with new people at first. I need time to get to know someone and understand: you mean well. A quick step towards me or too much attention at once is not my thing. I want to decide for myself when I come closer. That's why I'm looking for people with dog experience who give me the necessary security and time. People who don't expect me to be a cheerful, uncomplicated family dog from day one, but understand that trust must grow. When I feel safe, I can open up - and then my loving side comes out. One little quirk I have is with food: food is something very special to me. That's why I eat happily and sometimes quite quickly. It probably comes from my puppy days, when food was scarce and we had to fight for every meal. Today I know my bowl will be filled again, but some experiences just don't disappear. That's why I'm looking for people who can approach me calmly and understandingly and show me that I don't have to defend anything anymore. I've had so much behind me. Now I just want to arrive. Deine Bess 🐾❤️ Gechipt, geimpft, entwurmt, kastriert

About Bess

What life with Bess looks like

Bess is a young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Cats & Dogs in Not in Furth.

A young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Dogs and cats typically leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with an EU pet passport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Bess, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Bess?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Cats & Dogs in Not handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Bess on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Bess if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Cats & Dogs in Not will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Bess already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Bess isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Cats & Dogs in Not early rather than rehoming privately; they know Bess and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
