Bommel

Male · Senior · 9 years

Bommel | born 06.05.2017 | Caucasian | unneutered male Bommel came to us as a shelter dog in the summer of 2018 due to the overburdening of his owners. His enormous size and the associated strength make it not entirely easy for Bommel to find a place. Bommel is of the type a quiet, friendly dog when dealing with familiar people. The challenge for future owners is to consider his breed-specific traits and to promote him according to his capabilities. Bommel is typically a very watchful, very territorial dog who would like to take on the task of guarding and protecting his direct family and property without further guidance. The breed has been used over centuries to guard independent herds and protect them from attackers like bears or badgers. We write this to raise understanding for this type of dog who has no interest in showing special favor to humans – he will at best participate in seemingly pointless exercises like sit, stay, and heel out of goodwill. Bommel enjoys watching his territory, for example, from a raised lying position. He is very well adapted to outdoor life and we observe that Bommel prefers to be outdoors and only rarely goes into the indoor area of the doghouse. Bommel is tolerant of cats and dogs, but we recommend that his future home should be quiet and without children. A farm and/or garden (well secured, he was known as an escape king) are a prerequisite, where Bommel of course needs the opportunity to join his family. Bommel will only be rehomed with very experienced dog owners. Further information about Bommel we will gladly give you in a direct contact with the animal caretakers. About Bommel

What life with Bommel looks like

Bommel is a senior dog waiting at Tierheim Rastatt in Rastatt.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Bommel, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Bommel?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Rastatt handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Bommel on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Bommel if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Rastatt will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Bommel already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Bommel isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Rastatt early rather than rehoming privately; they know Bommel and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
