In the animal shelter since: July 2021 Estimated Age: Born around March 2015 Estimated shoulder height: approx. 70 – 79 cm Learn more about Bones in additional videos and photos! Black dogs have a hard time, especially large black seniors: Gentle Senior Bones is looking for his human companions! Fluffnose Bones once had a home. However, his owner had to go to prison. That's why he and other dogs came to us at the animal shelter. Find out more about dogs from Romania in our animal welfare FAQ. The big Cane Corso male dog initially seems intimidating due to his size, but in direct contact, he appears rather cautious and uncertain. At first, Bones was very reserved, submissive, and thoughtful with us. Now he has become somewhat more relaxed. When he notices visitors, he joyfully bounces up against the fence of his enclosure. As soon as one enters the enclosure, however, he quickly becomes calmer. He now very much enjoys cuddles and gently encourages the caregiver by following them and then lying down in front of them. Bones lets himself be put on a leash and enjoys walks. Outside, however, he still shows some insecurity, particularly in unknown environments. Often he is initially motivated but wants to return to the animal shelter after a short time. With regular walks, he becomes increasingly confident and would likely make progress faster in a suitable home. Bones gets along very well here at the animal shelter with female dogs, less so with other male dogs. For him, we are therefore looking for an experienced home that can provide him with calmness and structure, helping him to overcome his insecurities. Bones has a scar on his snout. This is not uncommon in Romania. Many people there still believe that burning a dog’s snout protects them from diseases. However, this scar does not impair our fluffy friend. Additionally, he has a cropped ear. In Romania, many dogs have their ears cut off to make them look more dangerous. X-rays show that Bones has small tumors in his lungs which have not worsened and do not cause him any problems. Our adoption team knows best about his exact health condition. If you have more questions, feel free to send us a message. It is important to us that Bones's new humans bring understanding for both his age and his ongoing health development. Read here what it means to adopt an older dog. We wish for this furry nose humans who are aware that shelter dogs come with a certain history. We can never predict at the animal shelter how a dog will react to life in Germany. Therefore, we are looking for people who bring patience, perseverance, and goodwill. But one thing is certain: Those who adopt instead of buying not only give a second chance to an animal but also actively choose against animal suffering – and for a life with a truly special companion at their side. Already smitten? Send us a self-disclosure form! Adoption If you are thinking about adopting, read through the adoption process first. All dogs are vaccinated, microchipped, dewormed, treated for fleas, and neutered before travel arrangements (with the exception of puppies up to 6 months and very old dogs). Dogs over 1 year old are also tested for Mediterranean diseases. If you have further questions, feel free to send our adoption team a message.

About Bones

What life with Bones looks like

Bones is a large senior mixed breed dog waiting at Hunderettung Europa e.V. in Duisburg.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Bones, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Bones?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Hunderettung Europa e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Bones on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Bones if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Hunderettung Europa e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Bones already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Bones isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Hunderettung Europa e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Bones and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
