Adopt Borgo

Male · Adult · 5 years

Borgo is more of a loner and shows a strong need for freedom – traits that are very typical for his breed. He can be handled well, has already adapted to car rides without any problems, and walks very well on a leash. When he encounters pedestrians or bicycles on his way, he often reacts insecurely and fearfully and then seeks protection in the next bush. We think that Borgo will make further progress with the right people and more practice. Borgo was discovered in a rural area near the city of San Roque. Some people had been feeding Borgo for a while. However, no one was looking for the dog, no one asked about him, and since he was not microchipped, he could not be identified. Therefore, he was taken in by a shelter in Melampo, where he now waits for his chance at a home. Borgo is still rather reserved around people. However, he always behaves affectionately towards the helpers. When he gets to know a person better and feels secure, he also enjoys the closeness and being stroked. We think that he will only be able to fully show his wonderful personality once he arrives in a new home and feels safe and secure. Borgo shares his run with Oslo. The two dogs get along very well and spend their days playing with each other. Since Oslo is moving to a foster home in Switzerland in late June, Borgo will unfortunately have to stay alone. Borgo is allowed to spend time with the large group of dogs in the run every day. He has contact with male and female dogs. So far, he has shown no problems in his interactions with other dogs. For Borgo, we are looking for experienced and patient dog owners who can give him the time and security to learn his new environment and settle in. He probably has never lived in a home before and has to get used to so much newness. Borgo is a large, muscular dog, which must be taken into consideration. Potential owners should also inform themselves thoroughly about the breed beforehand to be able to assess whether Borgo really fits into their lives. In the right environment and with him-trusted people, Brogo will hopefully lose his shyness completely and be able to fully show his wonderful character. This animal can be anxious in unfamiliar situations. Best placed with a resident dog (second-dog home).

About Borgo

What life with Borgo looks like

Borgo is a large adult dog waiting at Melampo in Melampo.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇨🇭Adopting from Switzerland

Swiss shelters require a home visit (Platzkontrolle) and proof of suitable accommodation. Cantons each have their own additional dog-keeping requirements (e.g. SKN training in some areas). Animals leave sterilized and chipped.

Frequently asked

Adopting Borgo, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Borgo?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Melampo handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Borgo on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Borgo if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Melampo will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Borgo already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Borgo isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Melampo early rather than rehoming privately; they know Borgo and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
