Adopt Raton

Male · Senior · 12 years

Raton has gradually lost more and more of his vision and we believe he is practically blind. Despite this, he does very well – both in his run area and during playtimes and walks, with or without a leash, at least in familiar places. The vision loss is degenerative due to his age. Raton is very clingy towards his trusted people. With new people, he needs time to build trust. He loves walks and rides calmly in the car. However, Raton cannot be touched everywhere or lifted up. It is important that his adopters learn to read his signals and be familiar with dog body language, as well as be prepared to accept his quirks. Raton is an upstanding fellow, he is usually well-balanced and always on the go with his beloved ball. In May, Raton tested positive for leishmaniasis, but he is on medication and doing well. A home of his own would be so important for him. We hope that the right people will soon come forward for him. Raton has made further great progress, seeking the closeness and attention of the local helpers. He also no longer gets irritated as quickly and already goes out of his way to avoid problems. He is much more relaxed. The hectic everyday life at the dog shelter is not conducive to the development of the handsome Raton (span. for Maus). When he is in his kennel and sees other dogs running around, he gets nervous, starts barking, and jumps up high. Experienced, calm, and especially very patient dog owners with a quiet household would be the ideal home for him. We hope Raton finds his people soon! The cat test revealed that Ratón is not well on terms with the cats and thus cannot be rehomed into a cat household 😿 Since Raton does not share affection and playthings and tends to be jealous, we see him as a single dog with dog-experienced people. Raton is a very sweet and playful fellow. He loves his ball and the people who play with him. Now, he even snuggles with his visitors and is no longer only focused on his ball. We observe a visual weakness in Raton, which is difficult to describe. Sometimes, when the ball is thrown, he runs past it and then searches for it, as if he has some kind of "blind spot" in his vision. However, this visual weakness does not hinder him in any way. He is a very cheerful and lively dog who enjoys his life to the fullest. The attention from the helpers or someone who plays with him especially cheers him up. Raton lived in a family. However, we strongly believe that he was not properly or at all trained there. The result was that he began to snap. The former owners gave up on walks. One can imagine that a lot went wrong there. When the situation became unbearable, the family sought help in Melampo and gave Raton up. Raton is an active and curious dog. Through the loving care of the helpers in Melampo, Raton is gradually regaining trust in people. At first, he did not like being leashed and had trouble when he felt cornered. We can only guess what happened to this dog in the past that has shaped him. He loves it when the helpers throw him a ball and he joyfully brings it back.

About Raton

What life with Raton looks like

Raton is a senior dog waiting at Melampo in Melampo.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇨🇭Adopting from Switzerland

Swiss shelters require a home visit (Platzkontrolle) and proof of suitable accommodation. Cantons each have their own additional dog-keeping requirements (e.g. SKN training in some areas). Animals leave sterilized and chipped.

Frequently asked

Adopting Raton, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Raton?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Melampo handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Raton on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Raton if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Melampo will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Raton already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Raton isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Melampo early rather than rehoming privately; they know Raton and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
