Bracken

Mixed Breed Β· Female Β· Young Β· 2 years

BrackenFemale German Wirehaired Pointer, medium in size. Approx. 2 years old (May 2026). Sweet and affectionate dog who loves a cuddle and gets on well with other dogs. Meet BrackenBeautiful Bracken is a female German Wirehaired Pointer. She is a very sweet, socialized, and affectionate dog of medium size. We believe someone tried to use her for hunting, but then abandoned her when they no longer needed her, and she ended up in the pound. Thanks to some kind sponsors, Bracken is now in a pension. Bracken is friendly and well-socialized. She loves cuddles, enjoys being around people, and gets along well with other dogs. Bracken is spayed and vaccinated. Bracken tested positive for heartworm on routine testing and is currently undergoing treatment. She will be able to travel to the UK after two negative heartworm control tests have been achieved and a scan to check there is no lasting damage. Heartworm is fairly common in Serbia and many dogs recover in full if caught early enough and dogs can lead full and normal lives. Heartworm is not generally well known in the UK but there are plenty of articles online and a useful video on our YouTube channel here. Bracken has showed a positive result for anaplasmosis, for which antibiotic treatment has been received. Anaplasmosis is a fairly common tick-borne disease prevalent in countries such as the Balkans. It is treated with a course of 30 days of antibiotics which is sufficient according to vet advice received. Bracken does not show any symptoms of anaplasmosis and has received her 30 day course of treatment. A useful information sheet on Anaplasmosis can be found here. Please contact the team if you have any questions. All our dogs are tested for the following prior to travel: Heartworm, Anaplasmosis, Erlichiosis, Lyme Disease, Brucellosis (since 11th June 2021). About Bracken

What life with Bracken looks like

Bracken is a medium-sized young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Balkan Underdogs in Tirana.

A young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" β€” quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures β€” to let them settle.

Frequently asked

Adopting Bracken, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Bracken?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Balkan Underdogs handles screening and the adoption contract directly β€” TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Bracken on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Bracken if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad β€” Balkan Underdogs will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Bracken already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported β€” ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Bracken isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work β€” that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Balkan Underdogs early rather than rehoming privately; they know Bracken and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect β€” names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
