Adopt Briela

Maltese · Female · Senior · 9 years

Update (11/22/2025): Now Briela is in a cage and doesn't understand the world anymore... She is strongly frightened and expresses this through her body language and barking. Currently, it is not possible to touch her, but we know that her current behavior is due to the new situation. Who could blame her for that. Fortunately, she can be won over with treats, which allows us to gain her trust. Probably, she will not further develop in the animal shelter. We wish that she will hopefully find a quieter home soon, without children, and where she can start anew. Our Briela is currently waiting in our partner shelter Allatbarat in Hungary for her second chance. She previously lived with an older lady who unfortunately fell ill. The family did not want to take the dog, and so Briela found herself suddenly in the animal shelter. No wonder she doesn't understand why she now sits behind bars. She had a home where they took care of her, and now something seems to be lost, and she doesn't know what she did wrong, but Briela is not at fault. Briela shows herself to be understandably shy, cautious, and skeptical at the moment, but she can be gently touched and stroked. In a new home and a more relaxed environment with sensitive people, she will surely bloom again. She is also compatible with other dogs and shows herself to be generally social and friendly. For Briela, we wish kind people who will give her a new start, provide her with security, and lead her step by step back into life. People who have time for her, who do many nice things with her, and who show her that she can trust someone again.

About Briela

What life with Briela looks like

Briela is a medium-sized senior maltese dog waiting at Pfotenhilfe Sauerland e.V. in Marsberg.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Briela, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Briela?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Pfotenhilfe Sauerland e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Briela on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Briela if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Pfotenhilfe Sauerland e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Briela already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Briela isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Pfotenhilfe Sauerland e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Briela and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
