Adopt Buddy

Mixed Breed · Male · Young · 1 year

Buddy was taken from a state shelter in Portugal by our volunteers and then had the chance to travel to the Netherlands, where he was adopted. Unfortunately, due to circumstances within the home situation, Buddy had to return to the shelter again. This was not due to any fault of Buddy himself. Buddy is currently back with us at the shelter and is showing what a lovely young dog he is. He is social, loving, and affectionate, eager to make contact with people and also gets along well with other dogs. He loves to play, is lively, curious, and has the energy that befits a young dog of his age. Buddy already walks nicely on a leash, is getting more and more used to life at home, and can also be left alone for short periods. Additionally, he is simply a beautiful, handsome sight to behold. We are now looking for a home for Buddy where he can truly stay forever. A place where people understand that a young large dog needs time, guidance, exercise, structure, and investment, but ultimately also gives back immense love, warmth, and loyalty. Buddy is a Portuguese Rafeiro do Alentejo (Portuguese Mastiff). He has an estimated birthdate of October 1, 2025, and is expected to be around 60 centimeters tall when fully grown.

About Buddy

What life with Buddy looks like

Buddy is a large young adult mixed breed dog waiting at DOC Oldenzaal in Netherlands.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇳🇱Adopting from Netherlands

Dutch shelters typically require a household assessment and an adoption contract. Animals are routinely sterilized, microchipped, and registered in the national pet database (NDG) before placement.

Frequently asked

Adopting Buddy, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Buddy?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. DOC Oldenzaal handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Buddy on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Buddy if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — DOC Oldenzaal will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Buddy already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Buddy isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with DOC Oldenzaal early rather than rehoming privately; they know Buddy and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
