Calleja

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 6 years

Calleja, three years waiting for his opportunity. Calleja arrived at our animal shelter in 2022, having spent his first three years of life tied up in the middle of nowhere, used as a guardian for an uncared-for piece of land. It took time for him to understand that we didn't want to harm him, but gradually he came to understand. Today, at six years old, Calleja has become a wonderful dog. He is sociable, obedient, and very affectionate when he trusts. He walks well, enjoys being brushed, and accepts the harness without a problem. He has medium energy and has coexisted without difficulty with other females. As is normal, at first he is cautious with strangers, but once someone earns his trust, he discovers a noble companion who will always be by his side. Calleja is intelligent and can be a bit stubborn at times, so he needs a family that can set clear boundaries with patience and respect. Ideally, his future home should have some experience with living with large dogs, without very young children. In the right hands, Calleja is an exceptional companion. He has already spent three years confined in a kennel enclosure, and any home would be better than those four walls. He is already neutered and negative for Leishmania. This animal is not suitable for homes with children.

About Calleja

What life with Calleja looks like

Calleja is a extra-large adult mixed breed dog waiting at ALBA Protectora Madrid in Madrid.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇪🇸Adopting from Spain

Spanish protectoras generally include sterilization, all vaccinations, microchip ID, and EU pet passport in the adoption fee (typically €250–€400 for a dog, €100–€180 for a cat). Many maintain partnerships with rescue transport providers across the EU.

Frequently asked

Adopting Calleja, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Calleja?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. ALBA Protectora Madrid handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Calleja on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Calleja if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — ALBA Protectora Madrid will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Calleja already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Calleja isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with ALBA Protectora Madrid early rather than rehoming privately; they know Calleja and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (ES). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
