Canelo &#8211

Mixed Breed · Male · Young · 3 years

Canelo has moved to 8700 Küssnacht. All the best, Canelo. Thank you, Mr. N. Canelo is six years old (as of July 2024) and has lived since October 2023 with a loving foster family under the care of Dolmen Animal in Huelva. When the incredibly sweet male dog moved into his temporary home, he was closer to death than to life. Canelo had been rescued from the Perrera just a few days before he would have taken his last walk past the dark cages … Back then, he was nothing but skin and bones, his leishmaniasis had marked his fur, he could barely walk in pain, and his gaze was dim and broken. The cheerful little Podenco that one meets on the street today would not believe that the happy dog, who greets everyone, be it human, dog, or cat, to make friends, had narrowly escaped death. Canelo’s eyes now gleam as much as his fur, and the sadness has given way to his almost never-ending wagging tail. Canelo has many friends and so much joy that he can share it easily. At home, he is typically quiet and almost invisible, wild games are not his thing, but relaxed cuddling and testing different cushions are. Canelo’s leishmaniasis is not curable, which must be clear to anyone interested in a life with the lovely gentleman, but it is – as can be seen – well treatable. Our little friend received a leishmanizide treatment after his rescue and is currently only receiving a leishmanistatic maintenance therapy with Allopurinol, which has proven to be very successful. Allopurinol is a cost-effective medication, but leishmaniasis is an illness that can quickly show a different face. We therefore ask you to inform yourself well before giving a home to an LM-dog, but we ask you even more to inform yourself well before categorically rejecting an LM-dog. Canelo has already endured much, and now he finally gets to be a dog – he is people-friendly, compatible with small animals and cats, has no problems with children and visitors, he is quiet, runs well on the leash, and is the favorite of the entire neighborhood of his foster family … he really deserves a happy ending with glitter and gold dust.

Canelo ist nach 8700 Küssnacht gezogen. Alles Gute, Canelo.

About Canelo &#8211

What life with Canelo &#8211 looks like

Canelo &#8211 is a small young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. in Gernsbach.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Canelo &#8211, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Canelo &#8211?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Canelo &#8211 on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Canelo &#8211 if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Canelo &#8211 already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Canelo &#8211 isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Canelo &#8211 and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
