Elle, Sting, Belle, Bianca… are the names of very special dogs that could be part of a particular superhero team. These are just some of the many dogs that perform the "job" of reading dog, or reading assistance dog. It is a wonderful support these animals provide to children who have difficulty reading due to cognitive problems, disabilities, or shyness. Learning this skill can be an almost insurmountable obstacle for some children, but it has been found that reading in the company of a four-legged friend helps them greatly to find the concentration and calm necessary to enjoy the story without anxiety or fear of making mistakes. Children tend to establish a unique, spontaneous relationship with dogs, one of closeness and friendship, which makes them feel free and at ease. The practice of reading together with a reading dog comes from this beautiful relationship: the child reads aloud to the dog sitting next to him, and by talking to and petting the dog, he forgets he must necessarily demonstrate his ability in reading. The dog, in turn, listens patiently and attentively, encouraging the child's confidence, who never feels judged or in need of corrections as when being guided by parents or teachers. Clearly, a reading dog is not just any dog; it is trained by experienced instructors and accompanied by handlers who are also properly trained and updated - who must love reading and children, but also have the qualification of assistant dog handler in Animal Assisted Interventions - so that schools, libraries, and all other environments where they work can promote children's reading together with a dog, ensuring safety and professionalism. The most important project worldwide is R.E.A.D.® (Reading Education Assistance Dogs), created in the United States twenty years ago and now also in Italy: R.E.A.D.® trains and coordinates the various teams in our country, well-matched pairs of dogs and humans ready to help children on their often complicated journey toward developing a love for reading. Who knows if one day one of the dogs housed at Apaca will leave the animal shelter to become a reading dog: imagining it lying on a carpet surrounded by books, together with a child who cuddles it telling it a story, is a thought that fills with hope and joy.

Elle, Sting, Belle, Bianca… sono i nomi di cani del tutto speciali che potrebbero far parte di una particolarissima squadra di supereroi. Questi infatti sono solo alcuni dei numerosi cani che svolgono il “lavoro” di read dog , ovvero cane da lettura. Si tratta di un meraviglioso supporto che questi animali danno ai bambini che hanno difficoltà a leggere, a causa di problemi cognitivi, disabilità, timidezza. Imparare questa abilità può essere un ostacolo quasi insormontabile per alcuni bambini, ma è stato scoperto che leggere in compagnia di un quattro zampe li aiuta moltissimo a trovare la concentrazione e la calma necessarie a godersi la storia senza ansie o paura di sbagliare. I bambini infatti tendono ad instaurare con i cani un rapporto peculiare, di vicinanza e amicizia spontanee, che li fa sentire liberi e a loro agio. La pratica della lettura assieme a un read dog nasce proprio da questa bella relazione: il bambino legge ad alta voce per il cane che gli sta accanto e parlandogli e accarezzandolo si dimentica di dover per forza dimostrare di essere capace nella lettura. Il cane, dal canto suo, ascolta paziente e attento, incoraggiando la fiducia del piccolo lettore che non si sente mai giudicato o bisognoso di correzioni come quando viene seguito dai genitori o dagli insegnanti. Chiaramente, il read dog non è un cane qualsiasi, viene addestrato da istruttori esperti e affiancato a conduttori anch’essi debitamente formati e aggiornati – che devono amare la lettura e i bambini, ma anche avere la qualifica di coadiutore del cane negli Interventi Assistiti con gli Animali-, affinché scuole, biblioteche e tutti gli altri ambienti dove essi operano possano attivare la lettura dei bambini insieme al cane garantendo sicurezza e professionalità. Il progetto più importante a livello mondiale è quello del R.E.A.D.® (Reading Education Assistance Dogs), nato negli Stati Uniti vent’anni fa e giunto anche in Italia: R.E.A.D.® prepara e coordina i vari team del nostro paese, coppie affiatate di cani e umani pronti ad aiutare i bambini nel percorso spesso complicato verso lo sviluppo dell’amore per la lettura. Chissà se un giorno anche uno dei cani ospiti di Apaca uscirà dal rifugio per diventare un read dog: immaginarlo disteso su un tappeto circondato da libri, assieme a un bambino che lo coccola raccontandogli una favola, è un pensiero che riempie di speranza e di allegria.
