Canica

Mixed Breed · Unknown · Adult · 5 years

When I first saw the photos of Canica, I thought: Wow! What a beautiful and extraordinary dog! The black licorice nose, the big, expressive, dark eyes, and those ooooh ears that suggest the influence of a bat, sorry, a Podenco. In most Spanish cities there are so-called "Perreras," killing stations, where the poor four-legged animals are killed if no one comes forward within four weeks of being left there to give them a home. If these state-run shelters are once again overcrowded, which is almost always the case, the animals are temporarily stored in cages--outdoors, with just enough water and food to survive and without any medical care. What this means in the already very warm months in Andalusia, I probably don't need to explain to you... Canica is one of several lucky ones who was rescued from such a shelter by our partners. Of course, we know nothing about her past and she herself is only willing to share a little bit--but what is much more important is where Canicas' journey is heading now and how she will adjust in the animal shelter in the coming days. Our little beauty has only been here for a few days, but our Spanish friends didn't want to waste any time and wanted to present their charge as quickly as possible on our platform. Canica is still shy, but this is not surprising given the drastic change in her life circumstances. Since most of the Podencos we take in can hardly look back on a past as a beloved family member and the "windy" breeds tend to be more reserved by nature, Canicas' behavior is quite normal for us. In the next few days and weeks, she will clearly show that she is certainly ready to give her heart away, provided the right person at the right time manages to convince our lady that it's worth trusting. That Canica is in the best age of around 4.5 years to start a completely new life is shown by many examples of successful "federmaus" adoptions. Certainly, our shy princess needs a quiet home without noise and bustle, preferably with a confident dog buddy who shows her where the best spots on the couch are and how to trick the master into giving out the most cookies from his pocket. Either way, Canica will one day dash through the (fenced) garden with a broad grin on her face just like so many of her fellow animals. Would you like to be in the front row when your Canica turns into a clown?. This animal was surrendered to the shelter.

About Canica

What life with Canica looks like

Canica is a small adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. in Gernsbach.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Canica, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Canica?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Canica on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Canica if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Canica already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Canica isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Canica and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
