Adopt Capper

German Shepherd · Male · Adult · 5 years

The young male dog, which we named Capper, was abandoned and tied up at our animal shelter parking lot. Our research showed that he originally came from Romania. Unfortunately, during the initial examination, it was discovered that he suffers from cryptorchidism (undescended testicles or testicular displacement). This means that the testicles are not in the scrotum but in the body, which can be very painful and increase the risk of cancer. We have already had the urgently needed operation performed, from which he has fully recovered. We would like to emphasize again how difficult it is when dogs are simply abandoned. So, we have no information about the dog and know nothing about his history or medical background. This makes it unnecessarily difficult for both us and the dog. At first, Capper was extremely suspicious and only focused on defense. It’s no wonder, given that a beloved owner might simply leave a dog on a parking lot. He was often stiff and appeared unapproachable, but now he is very loyal to his trusted people and lets everything happen. In the meantime, he has become a cuddly, funny clown. However, strangers are only tolerated as long as they do not come too close to him or his primary caregiver, and as long as his primary caregiver is stable and confident. He shows German Shepherd-like protective behavior and begins to control his trusted people at every step when allowed. In his home, he will need firm rules and structures that make it clear to him that he is not responsible for everything and can rely on people. Capper shows excellent social compatibility with us and enjoys every play session with female German Shepherd Leika (see photo).

About Capper

What life with Capper looks like

Capper is a large adult german shepherd dog waiting at Tierheim Bonn in Bonn.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Capper, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Capper?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Bonn handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Capper on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Capper if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Bonn will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Capper already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Capper isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Bonn early rather than rehoming privately; they know Capper and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
