Casper

Brittany Spaniel · Male · Adult · 5 years

Casper - a fighter finally finds his place in life Casper came to our partner animal shelter in Los Barrios in August 2024, after he was found under dramatic circumstances. He had apparently been abandoned and almost lost his life. When he arrived, he was physically weakened, completely overwhelmed, and deeply unsettled. Dogs have the admirable quality of wanting to live in the present. And even Casper has preserved his friendly nature despite this past. He is a gentle, good-natured dog who seeks the company of people and enjoys affection. He shows no aggression - instead, he reacts sensitively to stress and needs time to feel safe. Casper has already had the opportunity to live outside the shelter on multiple occasions, including after a flood and later in a private household when his condition deteriorated significantly at the shelter due to stress. Each time it became clear how much a quiet environment helps him: he stabilized, calmed down emotionally, and began to trust again. However, all these placements were only temporary solutions. This also applies to his current home - Casper is currently living in Spain with a foster family. Casper generally gets along well with other dogs. However, because he still struggles with uncertainties, he copes better with calm, respectful, and/or older companions. He walks well on a leash and finds visible relaxation outdoors in nature. Being outside is certainly the greatest thing for this handsome fellow: he not only enjoys being out and about - if allowed, he also finds a quiet spot in the garden and spends the hours in a dreamy state. It would therefore be great if his future home also has an enclosed outdoor area. But his past has left its mark. Casper sometimes runs in circles, both outside and on the leash. It is probably a coping mechanism from stressful situations from his earlier time. Therefore, clear structures, patience, and a reliable routine are especially important for him. As a Breton, Casper likely brings some breed-specific characteristics: These dogs were originally bred for hunting, are very sensitive, people-oriented, have a good nose, and enjoy movement in nature. At the same time, they belong to the more sensitive hunting dogs, which react particularly strongly to the mood of their humans and their surroundings. Casper does not need pity; he needs experienced, understanding people who can handle a dog who, although he brings with him a huge backpack of bad experiences, still wants to look forward. For a dog like Casper, every move is initially particularly exhausting. Therefore, we wish for him a responsible, calm home that gives him security, does not overwhelm him, and is ready to accompany him step by step into a better life. Casper has already achieved so much, survived so much. His courage has never been lost. All he needs now is one thing: a loving home where he can stay. A foster home would also be a great help and an important step towards a happy ending. Here are Casper's videos: Video 1 Video 2

About Casper

What life with Casper looks like

Casper is a large adult brittany spaniel dog waiting at SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. in Germany.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Casper, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Casper?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Casper on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Casper if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Casper already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Casper isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Casper and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
