Adopt Chalkie

Maltese · Male · Young · 1 year

04-06-26 Chalkie is a sweet little guy, although he is currently feeling quite nervous and overwhelmed to find himself here. He can take a little time to warm up when first meeting new people and isn’t yet confident enough to take treats from us, but he does begin to relax quite quickly. He finds great comfort in cosy blankets and loves to curl up and relax, so we think he will truly enjoy all the comforts that home life has to offer. Beneath his initial nerves is a real little snuggle bug. Chalkie gets on wonderfully with his kennel friends and relies on their company for comfort, so he will need a kind and confident resident dog in his new home to help guide him and give him the reassurance he needs as he settles in and finds his paws. As Chalkie has never lived in a home before, he will need to learn all about house training, walking on a lead, and the other basics of home life. He will benefit from a calm and patient approach while he adjusts. Chalkie could share his home with older, dog-savvy teenagers who can appreciate and understand that he will need a gentle and quiet introduction to the home, along with his own space to settle in. Chalkie is a gentle and sensitive little boy who just needs time, warmth, and reassurance. With the support of another dog and a loving home, he will soon settle in and show just how affectionate he truly is. He has been treated for conjunctivitis and our vets have noted that he has a Grade 2 luxating patella in one hind leg and a Grade 3 luxating patella in the other hind leg. These may improve with gentle exercise and as he builds up muscle tone, but this is something his adopters and their vet will need to continue to monitor. This dog can be homed with a resident dog.

About Chalkie

What life with Chalkie looks like

Chalkie is a young adult maltese dog waiting at Many Tears Animal Rescue in Llanelli.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Chalkie, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Chalkie?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Many Tears Animal Rescue handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Chalkie on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Chalkie if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Many Tears Animal Rescue will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Chalkie already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Chalkie isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Many Tears Animal Rescue early rather than rehoming privately; they know Chalkie and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
