Charlie

Mixed Breed · Male · Young · 3 years

Charly is an approximately 2023-born, unneutered male dog who came to us as a security dog. Unfortunately, he experienced little security and structure in his life, which is reflected in his excitable and sometimes insecure nature. Once Charly has developed trust, however, he shows a different side: cuddly, intelligent, and a little chatterbox. He can also be very distant and demanding. He loves having his belly rubbed and will then allow himself to be brushed without any problems and has no fear of touch. Charly is house-trained and a great dog if he gets the necessary structure and clear, calm guidance. However, outside, he quickly becomes overwhelmed, especially in encounters with other dogs or sometimes even with strangers. Then he reacts with barking and tries to keep them at a distance, which is mainly due to his insecurity. With calm, clear guidance and especially consistency, this can be better managed – although it may still be difficult for him at times, one can see that he is trying and making progress. Charly gets along with other dogs by sympathy, and children from the age of 14 who already have experience with dogs could be a possibility. Environmental stimuli like cars, streetcars, or loud noises do not faze him. Charly was classified as dangerous, which is why a leash and muzzle are required – however, he has already passed his behavioral assessment. Whoever gives him a real chance will get a loyal, cuddly companion who can really flourish in the right environment. Charly is looking for people with heart, patience, and composure who can give him support and guide him – then he will become a truly cool dog type.

DE·Show original

About Charlie

What life with Charlie looks like

Charlie is a small young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Darmstadt in Darmstadt.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Charlie, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Charlie?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Darmstadt handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Charlie on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Charlie if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Darmstadt will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Charlie already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Charlie isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Darmstadt early rather than rehoming privately; they know Charlie and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
