Charly

Male · Adult · 6 years

I’m Charly... Unfortunately, my owner was no longer able to care for me due to serious health issues, and now I’m looking for a new home—a quiet, dog-savvy home where I can settle in comfortably. Would you like to know more about me? I’m people-oriented, cuddly, and intelligent. Plus, I’m lively and love being active. Of course, I know I look absolutely adorable—but even I deserve to be taken seriously as a little dog. Like all other dogs, I need rules, training, and consistency. In the past, I lived only in rural areas with forests, and I’ve always found the city spooky, just like strangers. I used to be very active and loved sports, and I learned quickly—I’m a smart fellow, but still not to be underestimated (keyword: resource guarding). Also, staring or fixating isn’t really my thing at all. I love protecting “my” people—especially women—which sounds sweet at first, but is actually not without its challenges. I have a harder time getting along with men, which is why I’d probably be best suited for a single person. Ideally, our dog trainers would also accompany our first meeting in your home environment, because it’s precisely at home that I tend to show my protective behavior after just a few days. At first, I’m shy around strangers and need some time to build trust. But once I do, I’m super loving toward my people. With strangers, though, I’ll quickly defend my food and might even show my teeth out of insecurity. If something doesn’t feel right, I could even snap. That’s why there shouldn’t be any children living in my new home. I love long walks and swimming/bathing. I don’t necessarily need other dogs around me; I’m not very open to them. I’ll also snap if things get too much for me, if my personal space isn’t respected, or if I feel my food is threatened. What I’m really hoping for are people who will challenge my mind, give me plenty of time to build trust, and take me seriously as the dog I am. I need someone with lots of patience, time, and experience. Surely there’s the right home out there for me, too? If you’re interested, please don’t hesitate to get in touch via the inquiry form below.

About Charly

What life with Charly looks like

Charly is a small adult dog waiting at Tierheim Berlin in Berlin.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Charly, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Charly?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Berlin handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Charly on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Charly if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Berlin will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Charly already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Charly isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Berlin early rather than rehoming privately; they know Charly and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
