Joy

Pit Bull Terrier · Female · Adult · 6 years

Joy is a red beauty with many faces - princess, little toad, or furious. She has a friendly nature with her caregivers, being affectionate, playful, and always eager for adventures with her loved ones. However, she has a tendency to be clingy at times, which takes time to overcome. Once trust is gained, she becomes a loyal and loving companion. Joy has a history of being a stray and was initially seized by authorities due to her breed. She has since passed her behavioral test and is ready for a forever home. We know little about Joy's past, but it's clear she hasn't had the best circumstances. She carries her emotional baggage and needs experienced people who are willing to work with her to unpack it. Joy has different nicknames depending on her mood - princess, little toad, or furious. She is affectionate and playful with her caregivers, always eager to please and be part of their adventures. However, she can be overly clingy at times, which takes patience and time to overcome. Once trust is gained, Joy becomes a loyal and loving companion. She needs people who can set clear boundaries and be consistent, rather than putting her on a pedestal. She can be wary of strangers and threatening situations, showing her more cautious side. She has a strong prey drive and is not suitable for other animals. Joy is a special find, and we are looking for the "needle in the haystack" - someone who can provide her with the love, patience, and guidance she needs to thrive.

About Joy

What life with Joy looks like

Joy is a medium-sized adult pit bull terrier dog waiting at Tierheim Hamburg in Hamburg.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Joy, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Joy?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Hamburg handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Joy on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Joy if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Hamburg will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Joy already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Joy isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Hamburg early rather than rehoming privately; they know Joy and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
