(LINK TO THE VIDEO ON THIS PAGE – SET ANCHOR) Cheddar, the beginning of a very special story Little Cheddar was found all alone and completely exhausted in a Romanian kill shelter. Without his mom, he had to fight for survival there. For more information on how dogs come to the shelter and answers to general questions, check out our animal welfare FAQ. Cheddar has now arrived at the shelter and is being cared for. Our little guy can now recover from the hardships of the past and slowly regain his strength. Since Cheddar is still so young, he is at the very beginning of his development. His character will continue to take shape over the coming weeks and months – at this point, only the first signs are visible. If you would like more information about this furry friend, feel free to write to our placement team. Cheddar came to us at the shelter with pneumonia, which he is currently being treated for. Our placement team knows best about his exact health status. If you have any questions, feel free to send us a message. Puppies should not have to grow up in a shelter. That is why we urgently seek a loving home or an experienced foster placement for this little furball – a place where he can discover the world, build trust, and simply be a puppy. Anyone adopting a puppy should be aware of how demanding everyday life with a young dog can be: once house-training is done, the "wild adolescence" often begins – full of energy, uncertainties, and new challenges. The first years of life are an exciting journey that humans and dogs take together – with highs, lows, and plenty of learning moments. For this furry friend, we hope for people with patience, empathy, and perseverance – and with an understanding that shelter dogs often already come with some history. How exactly they will adjust to their new life in Germany can never be fully predicted. But one thing is certain: those who adopt rather than buy not only give an animal a second chance, but actively choose against animal suffering – and for a life with a very special companion by their side. Already smitten? Send us a self-disclosure form! Adoption If you are considering adopting, first read through the placement process. All dogs are vaccinated, microchipped, dewormed, treated for fleas, and neutered before departure (exceptions are puppies under 6 months and very old dogs). Dogs older than 1 year are also tested for Mediterranean diseases. If you have any further questions, feel free to write to our placement team.

About Cheddar

What life with Cheddar looks like

Cheddar is a puppy mixed breed dog waiting at Hunderettung Europa e.V. in Duisburg.

Puppies need routine, gentle socialization, and roughly two short outings a day for the first year. The first six months are the formative window — house-training, leash work, and quiet exposure to traffic, other dogs, and unfamiliar people happen now or not at all. Expect early-morning wake-ups and a few months of chewing.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Dogs and cats typically leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with an EU pet passport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Cheddar, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Cheddar?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Hunderettung Europa e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Cheddar on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Cheddar if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Hunderettung Europa e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Cheddar already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Cheddar isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Hunderettung Europa e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Cheddar and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
