Cherokee

Mixed Breed · Male · Puppy · 5 months

Cherokee came into the hands of animal welfare workers at Puntanimals in February, just as the hunting season was ending. It’s believed that the barely one-and-a-half-year-old male dog (as of July 2023) showed no interest in the chase hunts or was too slow for the horrific dog races that Galgueros train their dogs with, using cars and engines with choke collars. Cherokee was given up by his owner at the animal shelter, and thus he is one of the lucky dogs that do not end their suffering by being hung in trees or left with broken legs in the mountains. No, for Cherokee, there is still no end in sight; the wonderful, extremely lovable Galgo is ready to start a new life as a beloved family dog. Cherokee has lived at our friends’ animal shelter for five months and has made many fans. The curious mustache bearer (his facial whiskers are really legendary) shows his very best side. He has quickly learned that it’s sensible to get along well with the leash-walkers if you love long walks – and for Cherokee, these excursions are always an absolute highlight of the day. Unlike many discarded chase and hunting dogs, Cherokee has quickly developed a wonderful relationship with people, knows where his friends keep their treats, and can be easily put on a collar and harness. Although Cherokee is still in the middle of adolescence, he is charming through his even temperament, his thoughtful curiosity, his observational skills, and his friendly manner with people and his four-legged roommates. Cherokee is a quiet character who fully confirms the reputation of Galgos as tender and considerate dogs. Many representatives of his breed are almost invisible in the house, and whether inside or outside, Cherokee is already a big fan of extensive cuddles. Cherokee is active and loves exercise, and like all sighthound breeds, his future owners must be aware that it might be challenging to keep the elegant male dogs on a leash. A large, securely fenced yard would be great so the young man can happily run around, but also endurance sports like jogging, walking, hiking, or even cycling would certainly be good alternatives to ensure the young athlete gets the necessary fitness – and ultimately, it’s also good for your own health. If you are training for a marathon or simply like to go running every day, if you like to be outdoors and know how to play with a ball, if you go hiking on vacation and know where to find large, fenced fields where your best friend can show off his sprinting abilities, then don’t hesitate to contact us informally to see how Cherokee can soon brighten up your home and make your day more active.

About Cherokee

What life with Cherokee looks like

Cherokee is a large puppy/kitten mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. in Gernsbach.

Puppies need routine, gentle socialization, and roughly two short outings a day for the first year. The first six months are the formative window — house-training, leash work, and quiet exposure to traffic, other dogs, and unfamiliar people happen now or not at all. Expect early-morning wake-ups and a few months of chewing.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Cherokee, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Cherokee?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Cherokee on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Cherokee if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Cherokee already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Cherokee isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Cherokee and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
