Adopt Cindy

Maltese · Female · Senior · 17 years

“Retired Dog Grandmother” Gender: female, neutered Date of Birth: March 2009 Size: under knee-high Gets along with dogs: calm, unobtrusive dogs okay Living with children in the same household: no Home sought: possible in quiet urban areas The retired, 2009-born Maltese female dog Cindy arrived with us very neglected. She behaves rather distantly towards people and does not want to be stroked. She accepts the presence of calm, unobtrusive dogs well, but cats are not among her friends. The chest harness can be put on her with sufficient empathy. She does not want to be lifted high. However, she seems to know how to be carried in a bag, and she only goes on a leash with much patience and persuasiveness. Cindy is not house-trained (urine and feces) and is incontinently, and leaving her alone is difficult for her. Cindy’s fur was tangled and had to be shaved, she has no teeth anymore (thus requires mashed wet food), she receives pain medication for her musculoskeletal system, and upon arrival, her liver values were not in order, which has since improved but should be regularly monitored. For Cindy, we are looking for a home with people who give her space and do not pressure her, preferably in quiet neighborhoods.

About Cindy

What life with Cindy looks like

Cindy is a medium-sized senior maltese dog waiting at Tierschutz Austria in Vienna.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇦🇹Adopting from Austria

Austrian shelters follow the federal Tierschutzgesetz framework: adopters sign a Schutzvertrag (protection contract) committing to the animal's welfare. Spay/neuter, microchip, and vaccinations are included; fees typically range €150–€350.

Frequently asked

Adopting Cindy, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Cindy?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutz Austria handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Cindy on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Cindy if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutz Austria will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Cindy already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Cindy isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutz Austria early rather than rehoming privately; they know Cindy and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
