Clay

Male · 3 years

Located at a foster home! Description from the foster home: Clay is an imposing, neutered, 43 kg German Shepherd dog with a lot of charisma and character. In the past months, he has developed into a balanced, eager-to-learn, and loyal companion who can be both active and relaxed depending on what is at hand. I have worked with him on the following topics: • Leash Manners: Walks calmly on the leash and responds well to his human. • Off-Leash: Maintains a reliable radius, and recall is nearly perfect with consistent implementation. • Social Behavior: Communicates well with fellow animals and is reliably compatible. I still advise against keeping him with very small, agile dogs in the household. • Training: Clays frustration tolerance and impulse control have improved significantly compared to his time at the animal shelter. • Mental Stimulation: He knows tracking (from the IGP sport) with his nose and takes to new training tasks quickly, showing clear enjoyment. This includes the basics of scent work. • Living Situation: Both kennel and home stays are problem-free. It should be noted that life in a kennel is not suitable for German Shepherds and should be limited to a small portion of the day, as otherwise, stereotypical behavior can develop. Clay needs and deserves connection to his human. Specialties: Clay loves water (quite) a lot and shows great joy and energy there. He loses himself in splashing without guidance and displays hunting behaviors. Additionally, he is a ball junkie, meaning that playing ball and throwing sticks are not his thing. Experienced, confident people who enjoy leading him and giving him clear, consistent direction. An insecure or inconsistent person would not do him justice, as Clay quickly takes on the role of the decision-maker when someone does not set clear direction. Typical German Shepherd. However, in the right hands, he is a faithful, reliable, and eager-to-learn partner who brings peace, balance, and loyalty. Additionally, I see someone by his side who is willing (in my estimation, especially at the beginning) to face emerging conflicts head-on, consistently, calmly, and confidently, so that Clay also in the new home receives the right answers to his questions and can relax because he knows that his human has a plan. If you can imagine giving Clay a structured home with clear rules, mental stimulation, and lots of affection, he could be your perfect companion,.

About Clay

What life with Clay looks like

Clay is a extra-large adult dog waiting at Tierheim Essen in Essen.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

Note from the shelter: Ball obsession - no ball play allowed; excessive water enthusiasm; needs mental stimulation and consistent leadership

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Clay, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Clay?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Essen handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Clay on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Clay if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Essen will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Clay already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Clay isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Essen early rather than rehoming privately; they know Clay and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
