Adopt Cole

Livestock Guardian Dog · Male · Adult · 4 years

At the animal shelter since: 23.01.2023, Privatabgabe: no, as he defends his resources, Verträglich mit anderen Hunden: yes, but not in the same household, Katzenfreundlich: rather not, prey drive: low, Alltagstauglichkeitsprüfung: passed with his volunteer walker Manuela. Our handsome Cole is indeed a very charming and playful companion, but due to his breed, he is a real challenge and definitely not a family dog. Everyday things like cyclists, cars, pedestrians, or even grooming and vet visits are a horror for him. He is very insecure and anxious and wants to flee or defend himself. In his daily routine, he not only needs a consistent routine but also a confident, calm person. For this, a good measure of consistency, but also lovingly setting boundaries, is necessary. Additionally, he needs sufficient physical and mental work, but also enough quiet phases to continuously strengthen his self-confidence. Although one can earn his trust and the resulting security, there should be no children, cats, small animals, or other dogs in his home. While he goes on group walks with fellow animals very willingly, he is too insecure and explosive for a shared living situation. Additionally, his resource defense would bring too many dangers into everyday life. This is, despite good handling and management, consistently very pronounced and will always be a topic that needs to be worked on. This animal is good with children. Gets along with other dogs.

About Cole

What life with Cole looks like

Cole is a large adult livestock guardian dog dog waiting at Tierheim Wels in Wels.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

Note from the shelter: Requires house with garden in quiet area, needs experienced handler due to resource guarding behavior

🇦🇹Adopting from Austria

Austrian shelters follow the federal Tierschutzgesetz framework: adopters sign a Schutzvertrag (protection contract) committing to the animal's welfare. Spay/neuter, microchip, and vaccinations are included; fees typically range €150–€350.

Frequently asked

Adopting Cole, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Cole?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Wels handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Cole on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Cole if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Wels will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Cole already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Cole isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Wels early rather than rehoming privately; they know Cole and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
