Iron

Mixed Breed · Male · Senior · 9 years

Unsure, but cuddly gender: male, neutered Birthdate: November 2017 Gets along with dogs: by sympathy Gets along with children in the same household: no Home sought: with a garden in the countryside The unsure, 2017-born mixed-breed male dog Iron requires a short get-to-know phase and then is loving and friendly. He shows extreme cuddliness towards people and seeks a lot of physical contact. With other dogs, he is by sympathy compatible, and was also the second dog in his last home. According to the previous owner, he reacts to other dogs on the leash (he was led by a collar), but here he shows himself (with a chest harness) to be calm – social walks have just started, and are possible. We suspect that he needs a get-to-know phase for direct dog contact. Iron is not yet fully accustomed to the chest harness – sometimes he lets it be put on, sometimes he is still overwhelmed. Therefore, he needs a garden in his new home on the days when he is overwhelmed with the chest harness and cannot be led on a walk. Iron is house-trained, and in his last home, he could also be left alone. For his thyroid underfunction, he requires medication. As he often reacts unsafely to touch, we are looking for a home for Iron with a garden in the countryside, with people who can read his body language and do not overwhelm him.

About Iron

What life with Iron looks like

Iron is a senior mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutz Austria in Vienna.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇦🇹Adopting from Austria

Austrian shelters follow the federal Tierschutzgesetz framework: adopters sign a Schutzvertrag (protection contract) committing to the animal's welfare. Spay/neuter, microchip, and vaccinations are included; fees typically range €150–€350.

Frequently asked

Adopting Iron, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Iron?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutz Austria handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Iron on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Iron if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutz Austria will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Iron already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Iron isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutz Austria early rather than rehoming privately; they know Iron and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
