Cosmo

Labrador Retriever · Male · Adult · 5 years

This energetic boy is Cosmo! He is searching for a patient and understanding home where he can continue to build his confidence. When he first arrived in our care, he was extremely timid and nervous, finding new people and situations overwhelming. Since then, he has made good progress and is beginning to show his true friendly personality. Once he gets to know you, he will happily come over for a fuss and interaction, often greeting you with a wagging tail and a much more relaxed attitude. He is a friendly dog at heart, but he can become quite excitable and will jump up when seeking attention. He is also vocal in his kennel and isn’t shy about letting you know when he would like some company or affection. On walks, he is enthusiastic and currently pulls on the lead, so he will benefit from continued training and guidance. He is also very unsure around other dogs and will require ongoing socialisation to help build his confidence and improve his interactions with them. So for this reason, we would like him to be the only dog in the home. Due to his sensitive nature, he is looking for an experienced owner who has previously worked with nervous or timid dogs and understands the time, patience, and consistency needed to help them thrive. With the right person by his side, we believe he will continue to blossom into a loyal and loving companion. He will need a private secure garden. Any potential adopter will need to commit to multiple regular meet and greets so Cosmo can get to know them before the adoption takes place. As Cosmo came into the home as a stray we have no previous history on him so would prefer any children in the home to be 14+ years. If you have a holiday booked in the next 3 months please wait until you return to apply for a dog.

About Cosmo

What life with Cosmo looks like

Cosmo is a medium-sized adult labrador retriever dog waiting at Manchester & Cheshire Dogs Home (Manchester) in Manchester.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Cosmo, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Cosmo?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Manchester & Cheshire Dogs Home (Manchester) handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Cosmo on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Cosmo if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Manchester & Cheshire Dogs Home (Manchester) will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Cosmo already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Cosmo isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Manchester & Cheshire Dogs Home (Manchester) early rather than rehoming privately; they know Cosmo and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
