Dakota

Mastiff · Female · Young · 2 years

Dakota is looking for her forever home, and she has so much love to give. She’s an incredibly sweet, friendly girl who absolutely adores people. If you’re happy to give her plenty of fuss, she’ll be in her element! Despite her size, she is a gentle soul with a lovely nature and enjoys spending time with her favourite humans. She already knows some basic commands and is very eager to please so would benefit from further training. Being a young, strong dog, she can be powerful on the lead, so her new adopter will need to be confident and committed to continue her lead training. Because of this, she will be best suited to an active home where she can enjoy plenty of exercise, adventures and mental stimulation. If you are looking for a loyal, affectionate companion with a heart as big as she is, this lovely girl could be the one for you. She will need a private secure garden. She has socialised with other dogs whilst in our care, and is very playful and can be too much for other dogs as she does get in their face so for this reason we feel she would be best rehomed as the only dog in the home where she can continue to learn manners and boundaries around other dogs will the full support of her new adopter with lots of positive reinforcement. As Dakota came into the home as a stray we have no previous history on her so would prefer any children in the home to be 14+ years.

About Dakota

What life with Dakota looks like

Dakota is a large young adult mastiff dog waiting at Manchester & Cheshire Dogs Home (Manchester) in Manchester.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Dakota, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Dakota?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Manchester & Cheshire Dogs Home (Manchester) handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Dakota on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Dakota if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Manchester & Cheshire Dogs Home (Manchester) will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Dakota already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Dakota isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Manchester & Cheshire Dogs Home (Manchester) early rather than rehoming privately; they know Dakota and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
