Lyra

Belgian Malinois · Female · Adult · 4 years

Meet Lyra! This beautiful girl is looking for an active, experienced home where she can thrive. She is a lovely, sweet-natured girl with a very giddy and playful personality. Lyra absolutely loves attention and fuss and is always happy to be involved in whatever is going on. She has lots of enthusiasm for life and certainly isn’t shy about showing it! Lyra can jump up quite a lot when she gets excited, so this is something her new adopter will need to be prepared to work on. She is also very strong on the lead and will need someone confident and capable of handling her while they continue training. As you would expect from a Malinois, Lyra is an active, energetic dog who will need plenty of physical exercise, mental stimulation and ongoing training and socialisation. Due to the needs and characteristics of the breed previous knowledge and experience of the breed or similar high-drive working breeds is required. Underneath all that energy is an incredibly sweet girl who loves affection and companionship. She will need a private secure garden. Lyra has socialised well with other dogs, and is very giddy and playful with them. We do feel she could potentially live with another dog of similar size and energy levels following a successful meet and greet. (must be neutered). As she came into the home as a stray, we have no previous history on her so would prefer any children in the home to be 16+ years.

About Lyra

What life with Lyra looks like

Lyra is a large adult belgian malinois dog waiting at Manchester & Cheshire Dogs Home (Manchester) in Manchester.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Lyra, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Lyra?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Manchester & Cheshire Dogs Home (Manchester) handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Lyra on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Lyra if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Manchester & Cheshire Dogs Home (Manchester) will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Lyra already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Lyra isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Manchester & Cheshire Dogs Home (Manchester) early rather than rehoming privately; they know Lyra and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
