Dante

Galgo Español · Male · Adult · 6 years

(With video) Dante was rescued from a hunter who no longer had any use for him. With his magnificent floppy ears and beautifully marked face, Dante is a truly distinctive-looking dog. He walks calmly on the leash in urban environments, attentive and interested, without any signs of haste. During his appointment at the veterinary clinic for neutering, he initially seemed somewhat overwhelmed by the new surroundings and unfamiliar smells. However, since Dante is generally a confident character, he ultimately wasn't intimidated and completed the procedure without any issues. At the animal shelter, he gets along well with other dogs, though he doesn't really need their company—at least not right now. In free-roaming situations, he ignores them completely and prefers to focus on searching for food. His greatest passion is food; he’s fiercely protective of his meals and can be quite vocal about it, even toward his fellow dogs. The cat test was a highly stimulating experience for Dante. The many smells and the meowing cats were so exciting that he was constantly on the lookout for distractions, eager not to explode from sheer excitement. Currently, Dante remains somewhat distant toward humans—he lets himself be touched and shows cooperation during medical procedures, leashing, etc., but he’s not much of a cuddler or particularly people-oriented. Instead, he’s more of an independent dog who has probably learned that he needs to take care of himself in life. We can easily imagine Dante as a single dog for people who are experienced with dogs or galgos. Since Dante is still new to the shelter, we’ll observe how he develops once he becomes better acquainted with the local people. However, his humans should be consistent and loving, guiding him with confidence and building a foundation of trust that will ultimately become stable and secure for the male dog—so that he learns to place the responsibility for his life into their hands. Born: June 5, 2020; Height approx. 68 cm; Weight approx. 23.6 kg; Gets along with other dogs: yes; Cat-friendly: no; Character: independent, self-confident, attentive, interested; Shelter since May 2026. Dante travels chipped, vaccinated, neutered, tested for all Mediterranean diseases, and a blood panel of organ values will also be conducted before entry. Dante will be handed over with a safety harness; a GPS tracker is mandatory. About Dante

What life with Dante looks like

Dante is a large adult galgo español dog waiting at TS Fellwechsel e.V. in Varel /nur Vereinssitz, kein Tierheim vor Ort.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Dante, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Dante?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. TS Fellwechsel e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Dante on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Dante if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — TS Fellwechsel e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Dante already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Dante isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with TS Fellwechsel e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Dante and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
