Adopt Dero

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 5 years

The sibling puppies Meren and Dero were secured together with their now rehomed brother in December 2021 using a live trap after being found alone on the street. From the start, they were extremely fearful and are still difficult to handle. Even now, they cannot be precisely measured, but we estimate their shoulder height to be around 55 cm. They accept their caretaker Salva nearby, but prefer to stay in their secure pen when many volunteers are at the animal shelter over the weekend. They get along very well with the other dogs at the animal shelter. They especially found a liking for Luko, a strong male dog with a strong character, and often tried to encourage him to play. Unfortunately, Luko lost his battle with cancer, leaving a large void – not only among his human friends but also among the three siblings. In the pen, Dero and Meren often sleep snuggled up to each other in one bed, even though they have enough space. This closeness gives them security. Dero is a sensitive dog who needs a quiet environment. He is still very shy and will not open up in a new home overnight. But with patience and a confident only dog at his side, he can learn to trust. Dero should only be rehomed in a home where a secure dog already lives. He can be rehomed with his brother or alone, but never as a single dog. His new people should be prepared to give him all the time in the world and not mind if he prefers to observe from a distance at first. With patience, love, and the right support, Dero has the potential to continue developing. Who will give him the chance at a home of his own? Siblings of Dero:

About Dero

What life with Dero looks like

Dero is a medium-sized adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutz Pur e.V. in Kettershausen.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Dero, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Dero?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutz Pur e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Dero on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Dero if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutz Pur e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Dero already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Dero isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutz Pur e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Dero and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
