Duchess

Female · Adult · 4 years

Meet Duchess! (38kg) Duchess is a sweet, friendly and energetic girl who is looking for an active home where she can continue to learn, have fun and enjoy life to the fullest. This gorgeous girl is very giddy, playful and full of energy. She absolutely loves attention and can get so excited that she forgets just how strong she is! Duchess does jump up for fuss and affection, and can be a little mouthy when excited, so her new adopter will need to continue working on her manners and basic training. When she’s not busy demanding attention, Duchess loves playing chase with her ball and enjoys tearing around our compound doing her Zoomies. She also thinks hose pipes are great fun and will happily chase the water while staff are cleaning her kennel. Duchess is definitely a character and has plenty of personality. She is also something of an escape artist and will often try her luck getting out as staff are leaving her kennel, so her new home will need to be secure and her family will need to be one step ahead of her. She is very strong on the lead and will need someone physically capable of managing her strength while continuing her lead training. Duchess would benefit enormously from someone willing to put time and consistency into her basic training, helping her learn that she doesn’t always need to be quite so enthusiastic about everything. Duchess is looking for an active home with people who are prepared for a strong, energetic and sometimes excitable young lady. her new family will need to continue her training, work on her jumping up, mouthiness and help her develop good lead manners. She has so much love, fun and personality to give. Duchess will need a private secure garden. Duchess has socialised well with other dogs whilst in our care and is very playful, so we feel she could potentially be rehomed with another dog of similar size following a successful meet and greet. (must be neutered). As Duchess came into the home as a stray, we have no previous history on her so would prefer any children/visiting children in the home to be 16+ years.

About Duchess

What life with Duchess looks like

Duchess is a large adult dog waiting at Manchester & Cheshire Dogs Home (Manchester) in Manchester.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Duchess, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Duchess?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Manchester & Cheshire Dogs Home (Manchester) handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Duchess on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Duchess if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Manchester & Cheshire Dogs Home (Manchester) will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Duchess already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Duchess isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Manchester & Cheshire Dogs Home (Manchester) early rather than rehoming privately; they know Duchess and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
