Adopt DŻEM

Mixed Breed · Unknown · Senior · 9 years

Age: 2017 It is often said that an animal shelter is a prison for a dog. Because of the bars, the kennel run, and loneliness. Basically, it is, but... what can be said about an older large dog who was taken in urgently from conditions worse than an animal shelter? When he was not only in the kennel run, but also tied to a shed with a chain, without any walks? This is how DŻEM lived, an older, shepherd dog, isolated from humans and the world. Now he is slowly learning a good, safe relationship with humans. He begins to discover the joy of walking together in the forest, sniffing eagerly, and sometimes running in surprise, that his paws can carry him freely where he wants. He is smart and quickly learns to function in new conditions. He is not aggressive towards other dogs, but does not want his space to be violated. To new people he is a bit distant, but when he knows someone well, he shows joy and greets them friendly in the kennel run. He also knows how to walk beautifully on a loose leash. We are looking for a home for Jem, which will be aware that as a large, older dog, he will certainly require supplements for his joints and proper veterinary care for senior dogs. However, this will not prevent a new family from loving him and giving him the autumn life he deserves.

About DŻEM

What life with DŻEM looks like

DŻEM is a large senior mixed breed dog waiting at Schronisko dla Bezdomnych Zwierząt w Zielonej Górze in Zielona Góra.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇵🇱Adopting from Poland

Polish shelters maintain established transport routes to Germany, Netherlands, Austria, and Sweden. Animals leave sterilized and chipped. Adoption fees are typically lower than in Western Europe (often €50–€150) but adopters cover transport.

Frequently asked

Adopting DŻEM, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about DŻEM?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Schronisko dla Bezdomnych Zwierząt w Zielonej Górze handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw DŻEM on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt DŻEM if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Schronisko dla Bezdomnych Zwierząt w Zielonej Górze will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is DŻEM already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if DŻEM isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Schronisko dla Bezdomnych Zwierząt w Zielonej Górze early rather than rehoming privately; they know DŻEM and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (PL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
