Adopt Edgar

German Shepherd · Male · Adult · 5 years

Edgar originally came from Hungary, animal shelter Nyíregyháza. Since 2021, he has had to wait. Finally, in February, it was time for Edgar to travel to a foster home! His origin story is dramatic. His mother (mixed breed German Shepherd Ellie) was severely beaten with a stick by the owner. Fortunately, the neighbors reported it, and we picked up Ellie with her two puppies - Edgar and Allen Poe - from there. The two brothers were severely traumatized. For a long time, they were hardly touchable. But this time is over. The foster home reports on Edgar: He is very friendly and cuddly (an update for strangers will follow). Definitely, he needs a second dog; Edgar orientates strongly towards the existing dogs at the foster home. With these, he also gets along problemlessly when left alone. He is also cat-friendly. Edgar likes to go for walks, but a rural environment must be, as a big city would overwhelm him in the long term. New and loud noises still scare him (for now), but we want to emphasize that Edgar is not a scared dog. Rather, he is just a dog who hasn't been in Germany for long and still has a lot to learn, but with good potential. Please only apply for a dog if you can adopt him soon! Foster homes are not long-term accommodation options – foster homes cannot reserve dogs for several weeks or even months. A quick move into the final home is important for the dogs, as they are settling in, which can make a later change more difficult, but it is not necessary if a home is found. Additionally, foster home placements are urgently needed, as many dogs in Hungary are waiting to take his place. Many thanks for your understanding and support in the interest of the dogs!

Edgar kommt ursprünglich aus Ungarn, Tierheim Nyíregyháza. Seit 2021 hat er nun warten müssen. Im Februar war es dann endlich so weit- Edgar durfte auf eine Pflegestelle reisen! Seine Herkunftsgeschichte ist dramatisch. Seine Mutter (Schäferhund Mischling Ellie) wurde schwer mit einem Stock geprügelt vom dem Besitzer. Zum Glück hatten die Nachbarn es gemeldet und wir haben Ellie mit ihren beiden Welpen- Edgar und Allen Poe- dort abgeholt. Die beiden Brüder waren schwer traumatisiert. Lange Zeit waren sie kaum anfassbar. Aber diese Zeit ist vorüber. Die Pflegestelle berichtet über Edgar:Er ist sehr freundlich und verschmust (zu fremden Menschen folgt ein Update). Definitiv braucht er einen Zweithund, Edgar orientiert sich stark an den vorhandenen Hunden auf der Pflegestelle. Mit diesen bleibt er auch problemlos alleine. Katzenverträglich ist er auch. Edgar geht gerne spazieren, eine ländliche Umgebung muss aber sein, die Großstadt würde ihn auf Dauer überfordern. Neue und laute Geräusche erschrecken ihn (noch), wir möchten aber betonen, dass Edgar kein Angsthund ist. Sondern einfach ein Hund, der noch nicht lange in Deutschland ist und einfach noch einiges lernen muss, dafür aber gutes Potenzial mitbringt. Bitte bewerbt euch nur für einen Hund, wenn ihr ihn auch zeitnah adoptieren könnt! Pflegestellen sind keine langfristigen Unterbringungsorte – die Pflegestellen können Hunde nicht über mehrere Wochen oder gar Monate „reservieren“. Für die Hunde ist zudem ein schneller Umzug ins endgültige Zuhause wichtig, da sie sich zunehmend auf der Pflegestelle einleben, was einen späteren Wechsel erschweren kann und nicht notwendig ist, wenn ein Zuhause gefunden ist. Außerdem werden die Pflegestellenplätze dringend benötigt, denn es warten viele Hunde in Ungarn, die dann nachrücken können. Vielen Dank für euer Verständnis und eure Unterstützung im Sinne der Hunde! RegularLabs.EmailProtector.unCloak("ep_98ace577"); RegularLabs.EmailProtector.unCloak("ep_62546446");

About Edgar

What life with Edgar looks like

Edgar is a medium-sized adult german shepherd dog waiting at Pfotenhilfe Sauerland e.V. in Marsberg.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Edgar, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Edgar?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Pfotenhilfe Sauerland e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Edgar on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Edgar if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Pfotenhilfe Sauerland e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Edgar already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Edgar isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Pfotenhilfe Sauerland e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Edgar and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
