Eira

Mixed Breed · Female

Characteristics: Eira came to us at the animal shelter with her siblings as a found animal. Through a so-called double merle pairing, she was born blind and deaf. And yet – or perhaps precisely because of this – she shows us every day anew how impressive adaptability and joie de vivre can be. With surprising self-assurance, Eira uses her remaining senses to navigate her environment. She explores her surroundings curiously, learns quickly, and meets new situations with a mix of cleverness and bravery. People who know her greet her kindly and openly. Inside, in her familiar environment, Eira moves confidently and self-assuredly – she knows every corner and doesn’t bump into anything. Outside, however, she wears a special protective glasses so she doesn’t get hurt and can still explore her surroundings. She gets along wonderfully with other dogs – they give her orientation and security. That’s why we are looking for a home for Eira where an already established, confident, and social dog lives. This should be patient and tolerant because Eira cannot always clearly communicate with others due to her limitations. Eira does not fit the image of a “quiet disabled dog” at all – on the contrary: she is playful, intelligent, and sometimes a little whirlwind. In her previous home, for example, she discovered her enthusiasm for hunting cats and keeping them in check on the scratching post. What she loves most is nose work. Search games and sniffing tasks are a wonderful way for her to tire herself out and put her abilities to use – she really blossoms. For Eira, we are looking for people who are willing to embark on a special adventure. People with patience, empathy, and a sense of humor – and with the joy of growing together with her and discovering the world in her very own way.

About Eira

What life with Eira looks like

Eira is a small adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Kaiserslautern in Germany.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Eira, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Eira?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Kaiserslautern handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Eira on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Eira if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Kaiserslautern will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Eira already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Eira isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Kaiserslautern early rather than rehoming privately; they know Eira and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
