Elvis

Maine Coon · Male · Young · 1 year

Elvis was found and has been with us at the shelter for quite some time now. For a long time he absolutely refused to acknowledge humans and growled at anyone who came near him. Now, however, he's thawed out; although he doesn't approach us on his own, when he sits in a place where he feels safe, he lets himself be petted on the head and it's clear that it makes him happy. Elvis probably just needs an extremely long time to get used to new situations and people. He actually has the potential to become a cuddly cat, but it will take a long time for him to accept his new caregivers. Elvis gets along very well with other cats, and it would be helpful if there were already a friendly cat in the new home that he could orient himself around. The new home should be quiet overall (without children), and you should definitely have a lot of patience and some experience with anxious cats. After a longer adjustment period (you should wait until he trusts you completely) Elvis would also like to get the opportunity for some outdoor time again.

DE·Show original

About Elvis

What life with Elvis looks like

Elvis is a young adult maine coon cat waiting at Tierheim Darmstadt in Darmstadt.

An adult cat usually shows their personality within a week. Give them a quiet room with everything they need (food, water, litter, hiding spot) and let them choose when to explore. Don't force interaction — every cat decides for themselves when a new home counts as home.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Elvis, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Elvis?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Darmstadt handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Elvis on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Elvis if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Darmstadt will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Elvis already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most cats on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Elvis isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Darmstadt early rather than rehoming privately; they know Elvis and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
