We sometimes, fortunately not very often, have cats that test positive for Cat AIDS (or FIV). Most of these cats are in good health when we rescue them, and before their adoption. Knowing that with good veterinary care, an appropriate environment, and all the love you can give, an FIV cat (or a cat positive for feline immunodeficiency virus) can live a long time without any particular health problems. The virus is only transmitted from cat to cat, so a friendly and nice cat can easily coexist with non-FIV cats. The most important thing is sterilization, as reproduction and fights are the main vectors of contamination. Definition of FIV or "cat AIDS" - What is a FIV positive cat ...? FIV in cats is a viral disease. However, it is transmitted only from cat to cat. A FIV+ cat cannot contaminate any other animal, let alone a human being. Unfortunately, this unfounded belief still exists... The virus can remain latent (inactive) for many years and sometimes never become active, so it is entirely possible to live and share many years peacefully and without any risk with a cat carrying the FIV virus. Hence the importance of sterilization!! Tips for your cat or for adopting a FIV+ cat If you have a FIV+ cat or want to adopt one, you just need to take into account some elements that are not so restrictive: It is important to know how to observe your cat (like all cats, of course!) and consult your veterinarian at the first sign of something abnormal (fever, lack of appetite, etc.) Do not hesitate to provide him with a complete vaccination to prevent external diseases A healthy diet that will help his body fight and better defend itself against the virus And adopt a responsible attitude towards the risks of contamination with other cats. Therefore, it is recommended not to let him go out. Indeed, since there are no vaccines or treatments to eradicate the FIV virus, the only way to limit its spread is to avoid contact between healthy cats potentially aggressive and cats carrying the virus. But even more than for others, it is absolutely essential that your FIV+ cat be spayed. To avoid escaping, fights, births... which are all risks of contamination. Otherwise, any FIV+ cat can live a long and fulfilled happy life as a contented cat like all the cats who are not carriers of the virus. If you have non-carrier cats with a FIV+ cat, the key here is again to have each one sterilized and especially to favor the cohabitation between sociable and non-aggressive cats. Connaitre et comprendre pour adopter sereinement … Nous avons parfois, ce n’est pas si fréquent que ça heureusement, des chats qui se révèlent positifs au test du Sida du Chat (ou FIV) Des chats majoritairement en bonne santé lors de nos sauvetages, et avant leur adoption. Sachant qu’avec un bon suivi vétérinaire, un environnement adapté, et tout l’amour que vous pourrez lui donner, un chat FIV plus (ou positif au sida du chat), pourra vivre longtemps et sans problèmes particuliers de santé. Le virus ne se transmet que de chats à chats donc un chat cool et sympa peut très bien cohabiter avec des chats non FIV. Le plus important étant la stérilisation, la reproduction et les bagarres étant le principal vecteur de contamination. Pour vous en convaincre suffit de lire le témoignage de l’adoption de LANA ci-dessous qui a vécu 19 ans dans une super famille (qu’on adore et qui a adopté 2 chats ensuite – non FIV – avec notre association) et qui est morte de sa « belle mort » comme on dit, à 19 ans !! Vous aurez toutes les infos utiles et le détail de ce tendre témoignage d’amour pour un chat qui est certes un peu « hors normes » mais tout aussi attachant et sympa à voir grandir ! Définition du FIV ou « sida du chat »- Qu’est ce qu’un chat FIV positif… ? Le FIV du chat est une maladie virale. Qui ne se transmet cependant que de chat à chat. En aucun cas un chat FIV+ ne pourra contaminer un autre animal hormis un chat, et encore moins un être humain. Malheureusement cette croyance infondée existe encore … Le virus pouvant rester latent (inactif) pendant de nombreuses années et même parfois ne jamais s’activer, il est donc tout à fait possible de vivre, et partager de nombreuses années sereinement et sans aucun risque avec un chat porteur du virus FIV. Lana dans toute sa splendeur – Chat FIV+ qui a vécu 19 ans sans soucis… Les vecteurs de contamination du FIV sont uniquement par : le sang (bagarres, morsures…) l’accouplement et in utéro pour les chats femelles D’où l’importance de la stérilisation !! Conseils pour son chat ou pour adopter un chat FIV+ Si vous avez un chat FIV+ ou souhaiter en adopter un vous devez seulement prendre en compte certains éléments qui ne sont pas si contraignants : Il est important de savoir observer votre chat (comme tous les chats d’ailleurs !) Et consulter votre vétérinaire au moindre signe anormal (fièvre, manque d’appétit, etc…) N’hésitez pas à lui offrir une vaccination complète pour prévenir les maladies extérieures Une nourriture saine qui aidera son corps à lutter et mieux se défendre contre le virus Et adopter une attitude responsable face aux risques de contamination avec les autres chats. Il est donc recommandé de ne pas le laisser sortir. En effet, comme il n’existe pas de vaccins ni de traitement pour éradiquer le virus FIV, le seul moyen de limiter sa propagation est d’éviter le contact entre chats sains potentiellement agressifs et chats porteurs du virus. Mais plus encore que pour les autres, il est absolument primordial que votre chat FIV+ soit stérilisé. Pour éviter les fugues, les bagarres, les naissances… qui sont autant de risques de contamination. Sinon, tout chat FIV+ peut vivre longuement et pleinement une vie heureuse de chat épanoui comme tous les chats qui ne sont pas porteurs du virus. Si vous avez des chats non porteurs du virus avec un chat FIV+, l’essentiel là encore est de procéder à la stérilisation de chacun et surtout de privilégier la cohabitation entre chats sociables et non agressifs.
