Freki

Mixed Breed · Female · Young · 2 years

In the shelter since: July 2026 Estimated age: born approx. July 2024 Estimated shoulder height: approx. 50 – 59 cm Estimated weight: approx. 20 – 24 kg Get to know the cuddly Freki in another video! Cuddly, lively, and full of joy: will you give Freki a home? This furry friend was rescued from the streets of Romania and taken in by the shelter. Even at the time of his rescue, Freki showed himself to be friendly and open. For more information on how dogs come to the shelter and answers to general questions, take a look at our animal welfare FAQ. Freki has not been at the shelter for long and is only just getting to know everyday life there. During a first visit, the handsome male showed himself to be very people-oriented and open. At first he drew attention to himself at the kennel gate, jumping about excitedly. As soon as someone entered the kennel, however, he greeted his visitors with a wagging tail and immediately sought contact. Freki clearly enjoyed the attention. Again and again he nestled up, gave kisses, and even pushed his head under a jacket to get even closer. He actively asked for strokes and let himself be touched everywhere without any problem. Even on the playground he is curious and explores his surroundings by sniffing, but in between he repeatedly comes to people on his own to get some petting. Noises from outside the kennel distracted him briefly, but he stayed calm and did not bark. Freki shares his kennel with a female dog. The two seem to get along well and could be petted at the same time without one pushing the other aside. On the playground, too, Freki seeks out people's company when his kennel mate is being petted, but he does not push her away. Freki lets himself be put on and taken off his harness without any problem and stays calm while doing so. He already walks well on the leash, and he handles stairs without difficulty. Our caregivers take the time to get to know and assess every dog. As we learn more about this furry friend's character, we will add to this profile. Of course, you can already fill out a self-disclosure form for this dog. Freki is looking for an experienced home that will ease his start into his new life with patience, loving consistency, and understanding. His strong attachment to people and his cuddly nature already make him a dog with a big heart who wants to bond closely with his primary people. For this furry friend we hope to find people who are aware that animal shelter dogs come with a certain history. We can never predict in the shelter how a dog will react to life in Germany. That is why we are looking for people who bring patience, perseverance, and goodwill. But one thing is certain: whoever adopts rather than buys not only gives an animal a second chance, but also actively decides against animal suffering, and for a life with a very special companion at their side. Already smitten? Send us a self-disclosure form! Adoption If you are thinking about adopting, first read through the placement process. All dogs are vaccinated, microchipped, dewormed, treated for fleas, and neutered before departure (exceptions are puppies up to 6 months and very old dogs). Dogs older than 1 year are additionally tested for Mediterranean diseases. If you have any further questions, feel free to write to our placement team.

About Freki

What life with Freki looks like

Freki is a large young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Hunderettung Europa e.V. in Duisburg.

A young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Dogs and cats typically leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with an EU pet passport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Freki, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Freki?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Hunderettung Europa e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Freki on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Freki if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Hunderettung Europa e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Freki already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Freki isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Hunderettung Europa e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Freki and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
