Freya

Mixed Breed · Female

Freya is a large, elegant female dog (ca. 70 cm) with Greyhound charm—and very likely a dash of herding dog in her genes. She came into the care of "Mastines en la calle" a few months ago after being found abandoned. Today, the nearly one-year-old (as of April 2026) beauty shows how rejected dogs can become the most wonderful photo models and (even more importantly) cuddle buddies. Freya is a highly uncomplicated resident of the animal shelter in everyday life. She is very social, friendly, and actively seeks closeness to people. She is fearless, trusts quickly, and "orders" cuddles herself—charming but not pushy. On the leash, she runs well and shows herself to be obedient and attentive. She gets along well with other dogs and children; she also knows cats and is described as cat-friendly. Freya can live in the city—provided that her mixed breed is taken seriously and clear routines are established. The five-factor mix is high: the Greyhound component often means "rocket start in the park" followed by "sofa model in original size." Added to this is this talent that combines both breed components, lying down with minimal effort. The (possible) herding dog component often brings a touch of dignity and independence: Freya thinks for herself—and sometimes even ahead. This is great when you're looking for a partner and not a remote command receiver. A HSH-Greyhound mix can be a fascinating combination. Greyhounds often react quickly to movement stimuli (cue Sighthound mode), while herding dogs like to make their own decisions and assess situations. Translated: recall and leash management should be solid from the start (even though Freya currently shows no prey drive—she is also only one year old!), and Freya will likely not understand every "come" as a binding invitation—more as a friendly suggestion that she briefly checks. Humor helps with training. An ideal home would be one that treats Freya fairly, values both calm and movement, and sets clear, friendly rules. A securely fenced area would be a plus (Greyhound legs are fast, and good ideas are sometimes spontaneously put into action). Mental stimulation, relaxed walks, and consistent, positive training fit better than "more helps more." Those with experience with independent dogs—or willing to put in the work—will have a lot of fun with Freya. She is described as beginner-friendly; still, the clearer the framework, the more relaxed the dog. Freya is a cheerful, people-oriented companion with an elegant exterior, a pubescent quack head in between, and perhaps a little guardian angel with her own mind. If you're looking for a large female dog who likes closeness, is social, and brings a smile to your everyday life, then you might be the "match made in heaven" for Freya (and vice versa! 😉)

DE·Show original

About Freya

What life with Freya looks like

Freya is a small adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. in Gernsbach.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Freya, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Freya?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Freya on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Freya if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Freya already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Freya isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Freya and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
