Adopt Freya

Mixed Breed · Unknown · Adult · 5 years

The little calf Freya was born in June 2021 as a twin on a farm in Lower Saxony in Rehden, not much bigger than a hare. Normally, such calves that are born too small would be killed at fourteen days old to be ground into dog food, as no one wants them. She also couldn’t become a milk cow, as female twin calves are usually infertile. But the farmer’s family decided not to kill Freya, but to milk her themselves. On Christmas Day, she was supposed to end up as a festive roast. However, Freya was lucky—Hartmut, the caretaker of the Angel Calf shelter in Rehden, was looking for a companion for the small Jersey ox Joschi, who, luckily, was saved from being slaughtered and moved to a foster home in Rehden in late September. Hartmut managed to convince the farmer’s family to sell Freya to the Angel Calf shelter. But they actually asked first what they were supposed to eat on Christmas Day. Freya and Joschi, however, don’t worry about that; they are happily off the butcher’s block for good and are already thick friends.

About Freya

What life with Freya looks like

Freya is a medium-sized adult mixed breed rabbit waiting at Schutzengel für Tiere e.V. in Drolshagen.

Rabbits are social animals — most shelters recommend adopting them in bonded pairs rather than alone. They need fresh hay daily, several hours of out-of-cage time, and rabbit-safe spaces to explore. They live eight to twelve years, longer than many people expect.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Freya, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Freya?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Schutzengel für Tiere e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Freya on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Freya if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Schutzengel für Tiere e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Freya already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most rabbits on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Freya isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Schutzengel für Tiere e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Freya and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
