Otto

Mixed Breed · Unknown

Otto The 2000-born Trakehner stallion Otto looks back on an eventful life, for he was a successful high-performance show horse and traveled with his owner to events not only in Germany. In 2014, however, Otto was allowed to retire well-deserved, everything seemed good. Privately, his owner then had a lot of bad luck; in 2021, she returned to Germany from abroad with her three horses and little money. She could only keep Otto, who came to us as a pension horse, and his owner worked at the farm to be able to cover the pension costs for Otto. It seemed to be a good solution for everyone, but first, things don't always turn out as expected: Otto became the seventh guardian angel horse at the farm and is now desperately in need of a sponsor. On the pasture, Otto wears a special fly mask and a feed restrictor, as he suffers from Cushing's syndrome, the dangerous hoof trimming is encouraged.

DE·Show original

About Otto

What life with Otto looks like

Otto is a medium-sized adult mixed breed horse waiting at Schutzengel für Tiere e.V. in Drolshagen.

Adopting a horse is a long-term commitment that almost always requires either land or a boarding stable. The shelter will discuss the horse's training level, vet history, and what kind of work or companionship they're suited for. Expect ongoing costs: feed, farrier, vet, and stabling.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

Paperwork, vet checks and transport rules differ by species and by country. Ask the shelter what is included and what you will need to arrange before you commit.

Frequently asked

Adopting Otto, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Otto?: Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Schutzengel für Tiere e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Otto on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Otto if I live in another country?: Sometimes. Whether a horse can move between countries depends on the species and the rules in both countries, and some species need permits or have restrictions. Ask Schutzengel für Tiere e.V. what paperwork and transport they require, and check the import rules of your country before you commit.
Is Otto already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?: What a horse comes with (vet checks, vaccinations, identification, paperwork) varies by shelter and species. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask Schutzengel für Tiere e.V. directly what is included and what Otto still needs.
What happens if Otto isn't the right fit?: Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Schutzengel für Tiere e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Otto and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?: TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
