Gecchetto

German Shepherd · Male · Young · 1 year

During our team project tour in mid-April 2026, Canile Arzachena was naturally a very important destination for us. On the one hand, we wanted to see our animals that had been waiting there for a long time, on the other hand, the dogs were all to be treated prophylactically against parasites. Because as we had already seen at other stops, ticks were once again very widespread. Last but not least, there were also new arrivals that we wanted to meet. For example, the young male dog Gecchetto. Gecchetto comes from a very unpleasant environment. And he is not the first dog from this environment that we now want to help. Just like the dog we saved a year ago from being euthanized and had operated on to cure the fractures and injuries that the dog supposedly suffered in a car accident. And also like Achillo, who came into the care of our partner Caterina with serious injuries - a large open wound on the left hind leg and a broken right hind leg. Allegedly these injuries were caused by an "accident," but no one believed that. Because the dog owner has long been suspected of mistreating his dogs, but there were no legal possibilities to intervene. At least until a few weeks ago. Three more dogs were seized then - fortunately before they also became victims of "accidents." Gecchetto was the first of the trio to move into the Canile. (The two sisters have now also moved in. We will meet them during our next visit to the Canile and present them here on the website.) Gecchetto is not only a very handsome Shetland Sheepdog mix, he also has a very friendly character. He was initially cautious when we came into his cage, which did not surprise us given his background. But he quickly realized that we had no bad intentions, relaxed, took the treats, and enjoyed the cuddles. What he now needs are people who can give him a forever home, whom he can trust, and who include him in all family activities. We are sure that he will return the affection he receives many times over. Would you like to take this treasure into your family? If you are currently looking for a new furry family member and you are aware that adoption brings not only a lot of joy, but also work and great responsibility, we look forward to your message. We place dogs throughout the country. Your contact person for this

About Gecchetto

What life with Gecchetto looks like

Gecchetto is a large young adult german shepherd dog waiting at ProTier e.V. in Germany.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Gecchetto, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Gecchetto?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. ProTier e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Gecchetto on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Gecchetto if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — ProTier e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Gecchetto already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Gecchetto isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with ProTier e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Gecchetto and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
