Gema &#8211

Mixed Breed · Female · Young · 3 years

The Podenco Maneto is probably the dog that most often makes us Northerners laugh. Not only because these funny characters are often born clowns, but also because most people think they are looking at a special mix of dachshund and Podenco. Well, the Maneto looks exactly like that, sprinting around on short, crooked legs, he has a body shape reminiscent of Vienna sausages, and the always tuned-in bat-like ears complete the entertaining picture. But the Maneto is not a mixed breed, but a smart, specialized running dog for rabbit hunting - and also a clown. Olga and her daughter Gema were rescued in March 2023 by an animal welfare worker from ArcoNatura, when he was out with his own dog. The two girls didn't have to be caught, they just came friendly wagging when called. Olga and Gema are obviously not purebred Manetos, but the big influence of the nice solo performer can't be ignored. Olga is a lovable six-year-old (as of May 2023), who has quickly made friends with her four-legged companions and has quickly won the hearts of the animal welfare workers. For a Podenco, Olga is a bit stocky around the middle, but she is enthusiastic about joint activities and also likes to play. With responsible people by her side who like to be outside with her and take care of Olga's diet, this small problem will probably quickly solve itself. Olga already has top marks in cuddling and loving, and even though summer is cautiously stretching out its fingers, the next winter is sure to come, and Olga is an excellent hot water bottle for shared television evenings. Gema has a very unusual color for a Maneto mix, which makes the fun one-year-old even more of a real eye-catcher. But Gema is not only a wonderful female dog on the outside. She has an empathetic and tender nature, is very approachable towards people, and always has a good mood. Mischief shines from Gema's eyes, and we are already looking forward to hearing about the hobbies that the cheerful heartbreaker has taken up from her new home. Gema has an adventurous spirit and enjoys being out with people she trusts to explore the world, but she also knows how to relax on the couch, enjoys tummy massages, and likes to have her soft, always attentive ears stroked.

About Gema &#8211

What life with Gema &#8211 looks like

Gema &#8211 is a small young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. in Gernsbach.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Gema &#8211, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Gema &#8211?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Gema &#8211 on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Gema &#8211 if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Gema &#8211 already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Gema &#8211 isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Gema &#8211 and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
