Gus

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 4 years

This handsome almost 4 year old lad is gorgeous Gus. He’s looking for a new home as a matter of urgency because he is due to go into kennels at the beginning of December and we would love to have him in a new home before then. Gus does not have any major dislikes. He loves to run and be off lead in wide open spaces. He is a characteristic Velcro dog and wants cuddles and love. He has no behavioural problems, he loves his walks and goes out for approximately 2 x 45 min walks per day. He also goes to a full day of doggy day care once a week which he loves when they are at work and he is taken by dog walker on Thursdays which again he loves. When he’s lefts at home he’s quiet and calm, he sleeps and looks out the windows provided he has been exercised enough before leaving him. He can be left alone for 3-4 hours without any problems and has never messed in the house or caused any damage. With new dogs he is mostly submissive and very playful with other dogs. He especially likes to run around with other active large breeds. He doesn’t bother with small dogs- he sniffs them and carries on his way Gus does not like cats and can be very interested in them. With livestock he is curious but cautions and respectful especially around the larger animals. With young children Gus can be excitable at first but gentle and not overly phased, he’s been living with a new born for 6 months, he hasn’t lived with toddlers or older children. Gus walks nicely on his slip lead, his recall is hit and miss, sometimes it is very good and other times not it usually depends on any prey in the area or scents that draw his attention. He has had puppy training and dog training at a Gundog school in Cambridge. He hasn’t stayed in kennels specifically but he is used to staying at different peoples homes for periods of time (days to months.) Gus responds to basic commands like wait, come, here, sit, down, roll, spin, release command is ‘okay’. When traveling he’s excited because it usually means he is going somewhere nice for a walk. He has travel in the car for up to 4 hour journeys on multiple occasions. He settles and sleeps without issues. Gus has a chronic condition called DISH (Disseminated Idiopathic Skeletal Hyperostosis) which in other words means his spinal bones have excessive bone growth making his back less mobile. No other puppies in his litter have this condition and his owners were told that there is no known cause- it’s just bad luck (iodiopathic – no known cause). While he was still growing he had some nerve pain in his back legs and muscle wasting but since growing to full size this has stopped and is now stable. He is well managed on regular medication and there has been no further progression for the last 18 months. This condition is well documented in his medical records. He is expected to live a normal length life with the ongoing chronic medication. He has no mobility restrictions and lives a normal GSP lifestyle. He is neutered and has up to date vaccinations and worm and flea treatments. Gus currently lives in the Surrey area and will be rehomed with his 5 weeks free Agria Insurance and our Adoption Contract. His owners are open to a conversation about continuing his medication costs 🥰 If you feel that you can offer this loving lad the next chapter of his life please contact us. About Gus

What life with Gus looks like

Gus is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at GSP Rescue UK in United Kingdom.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Gus, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Gus?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. GSP Rescue UK handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Gus on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Gus if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — GSP Rescue UK will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Gus already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Gus isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with GSP Rescue UK early rather than rehoming privately; they know Gus and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (the shelter's own language). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
