Adopt Haki

German Shepherd · Male · Adult · 4 years

Haki arrived at our animal shelter in May 2024 via official channels with a pregnant female dog. At first, Haki showed a very aggressive attitude towards humans, with a readiness to use his teeth. With much patience and care, it was possible to fit Haki with a muzzle and get to know him better under supervision. It quickly became clear that behind the "very confident" male dog lies a very insecure young puppy who longs to take on responsibility. Haki brings a very good basic obedience and enjoys working with his handler. Long walks with his regular walking buddy or playtime on the leash with his caretakers is just what he likes. Haki gets along well with stable female dogs, but at first is often a bit distant. With male dogs, it depends on their liking. In his new home, a confident, physically mature female dog would be ideal. Haki is, typically a German Shepherd, more of the "one-man dog," so he prefers a home with an individual or, at most, a couple. Future owners should have sufficient experience in handling German Shepherds. They should also be familiar with dogs that have learned to be assertive out of insecurity and to use their teeth. Future owners should also be comfortable with the idea of a muzzle—Haki wears it easily, like a person wears glasses. 😊 In his kennel, when there’s nothing to do, Haki is mostly quiet and doesn’t destroy anything. We assume that after getting used to his new home, he can be left alone for a few hours. Children should not live in the new home due to Haki’s high energy and potential for rough play. Cats should also not be in the household. Haki is very environmentally friendly, so we don’t necessarily need a very quiet home for him. However, given his size, it’s not easy for him to live in a city, so an ideal place for Haki would be a large, fenced yard. Haki has the opportunity to guard his enclosed run at night for his own enjoyment. As an Osteo-European, Haki weighs more and has a higher withers than a German German Shepherd. Potential interested parties should be prepared for a longer trial period, as we are very careful with Haki. In inexperienced hands, he can quickly become dangerous. With clear, confident leadership, Haki is happy to step back.

About Haki

What life with Haki looks like

Haki is a extra-large adult german shepherd dog waiting at Tierheim Neuwied in Neuwied.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Haki, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Haki?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Neuwied handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Haki on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Haki if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Neuwied will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Haki already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Haki isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Neuwied early rather than rehoming privately; they know Haki and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
