Adopt Hamish

Great Dane · Male · Adult · 4 years

This lovable boy is looking for patient, experienced adopters who can help him continue learning about the world and building his confidence. He would thrive in an adult only home in a quieter residential or rural area, away from the hustle and bustle of busy roads that he currently finds overwhelming. Hamish will need owners who are around for most of the day to help him settle successfully, as time alone will need to be introduced gradually. Hamish is a strong, energetic lad who is still working on his lead manners and would benefit from physically capable adopters, ideally a two person household, who can manage his strength and continue his training using the thing he loves most, food! As Hamish likes to investigate the world with his mouth, he'll need a tidy, uncluttered home where objects can be kept safely out of reach while he settles in. A very sweet and goofy boy, Hamish is a four-year-old crossbreed with a huge personality and an even bigger appetite! He absolutely adores food, whether it's tasty treats, enrichment activities or even an entire watermelon to happily demolish. He enjoys gentle fuss but is equally happy amusing himself with a good sniff around. On quieter walks he can settle into a lovely rhythm, happily taking in the world around him, and he walks calmly alongside other dogs without needing to be in their space. Watching Hamish grow in confidence, discover new experiences and learn that the world isn't such a scary place will be hugely rewarding for the lucky people who welcome him home. For someone willing to invest time, patience and understanding, Hamish will blossom into a wonderfully entertaining, loyal and characterful companion.

About Hamish

What life with Hamish looks like

Hamish is a extra-large adult great dane dog waiting at Dogs Trust Shoreham in Shoreham by Sea.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Hamish, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Hamish?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dogs Trust Shoreham handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Hamish on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Hamish if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Dogs Trust Shoreham will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Hamish already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Hamish isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dogs Trust Shoreham early rather than rehoming privately; they know Hamish and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
