Happy

Female · Senior · 11 years

Happy is an older American Staffordshire Terrier who was born on 26 May 2015. She is a gentle soul who has been living alone in a small enclosure in a backyard for a long time. Her owner has been away since early August, and neighbors noticed that Happy needed help. They started feeding her out of kindness. When Happy was taken to the shelter, her enclosure was dirty, and there was no food or water. Her ears were also affected by flies. At the shelter, we saw a very withdrawn girl. Happy walks stiffly and probably has some vision problems. But behind her quiet demeanor is an incredibly good dog. ❤️ Happy lets herself be touched calmly and sometimes visibly enjoys a gentle scratch. And occasionally, a playful side emerges: with a soft cuddle, she can suddenly become delightfully enthusiastic, pulling and destroying with a soft toy. As a kitchen manager, we have also found that she feels very comfortable in a bench, but a comfortable chair is also perfect for this lady. Happy doesn't need a busy life. She needs peace, patience, predictability, and a warm bed. A place where she can safely grow old. Where she is not forgotten. Where someone gives her the time to learn trust. The specialist's advice is to do infiltrations in her lower back.

About Happy

What life with Happy looks like

Happy is a senior dog waiting at Dierenasiel Genk in Genk.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇧🇪Adopting from Belgium

Belgian shelters operate under regional law (Flanders, Wallonia, Brussels each have their own rules). All adoptions include the Eurochip, vaccinations, and a stewardship contract. Several Flemish shelters partner with Dutch and German rescue networks.

Frequently asked

Adopting Happy, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Happy?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dierenasiel Genk handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Happy on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Happy if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Dierenasiel Genk will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Happy already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Happy isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dierenasiel Genk early rather than rehoming privately; they know Happy and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
