Tarzan

Mixed Breed Β· Male Β· Senior Β· 11 years

Tarzan is a dog with character. A dog who knows what he wants, who is curious about the world and who doesn't just let himself be told that something is not allowed. When he was seized together with three other dogs, the four dogs could basically get along well with each other. However, it was decided to house them separately for more peace. Earlier imposed measures around veterinary follow-up were not followed up sufficiently. In Tarzan himself, his hindquarters would later prove to be the main concern. Because Tarzan walks differently. His hindquarters are weakened and he moves unstably. Physiotherapy has found that he has neurological failure. Sometimes his legs don't seem to be able to follow what his head has thought. Yet he doesn't let himself be stopped by that. A chair? Tarzan wants to sit on it. A tennis ball? He must have it. A cupboard full of toys? It is clear that it is filled with things that are intended for him exclusively. Tarzan is a dog with a huge drive. During his stay in the kitchen, he is very enthusiastic. His legs can hardly keep up with his plans. In the room, he wanders around curiously, examines everything and seems to be constantly looking for the next adventure. An open cupboard is an irresistible invitation. He picks up a tug toy from the cupboard, takes it to the chair and starts chewing on it. A little later, he goes to the cupboard again. He even climbs into it and collects more toys. Several toys found and all sorts of other things fall on top of him, but Tarzan? He doesn't care about it. He sniffs through the fallen toys, chooses one and then takes it to his chair. Especially tennis balls have stolen his heart. He goes after them like a shot when one falls and takes it proudly to his basket. Balls are not only played; they are also thoroughly examined, stripped and, if necessary, expertly demolished. Eating is also a serious matter for this boy. Tarzan is enormously feed-oriented. Begging? Absolutely. Picking up something tasty? If the opportunity arises, why not? His feed-orientation can be a great help, because where toys sometimes cause possessiveness, Tarzan is happy to trade with food. Tarzan knows SIT and OFF and is generally very friendly to people. He likes to make contact himself and likes to be stroked. And maybe that's one of the nicest things about Tarzan: despite everything, he is not afraid. But behind that tough name and that tough character is also a dog who loves to make contact. A dog who becomes happy with his collar. A dog who enjoys being stroked. A dog who collects his toys as if they were precious treasures. A dog who, despite his difficult hindquarters, still wants to run after a tennis ball with shining eyes. Tarzan may not have the strength of the jungle legend after which he is named. But his zest for life? That's still there. And maybe he now needs someone to walk alongside him. Someone who understands that his legs sometimes lag behind, but that his heart still wants to go forward. Tarzan is not looking for a perfect life. He is looking for a place where he can just be Tarzan. A bit stubborn, a bit naughty, very enthusiastic and especially very happy to be close to his people.

Daar wil Tarzan in. Tarzan is enorm voergericht. Bedelen? Absoluut. Iets lekkers pikken?

About Tarzan

What life with Tarzan looks like

Tarzan is a large senior mixed breed dog waiting at Dierenasiel Genk in Genk.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

πŸ‡§πŸ‡ͺAdopting from Belgium

Belgian shelters operate under regional law (Flanders, Wallonia, Brussels each have their own rules). All adoptions include the Eurochip, vaccinations, and a stewardship contract. Several Flemish shelters partner with Dutch and German rescue networks.

Frequently asked

Adopting Tarzan, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Tarzan?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dierenasiel Genk handles screening and the adoption contract directly β€” TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Tarzan on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Tarzan if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad β€” Dierenasiel Genk will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Tarzan already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported β€” ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Tarzan isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work β€” that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dierenasiel Genk early rather than rehoming privately; they know Tarzan and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect β€” names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
