Adopt Harry

Male · 6 months

Harry is a young herder mix who came to us because his previous owners could no longer care for him. He is an energetic, playful, and smart dog who is still in development and needs clear guidance. Harry is a super sweet cuddle bear who loves to be part of the family. He is people-oriented, well-mannered, eats a good amount of his kibble, and takes treats very calmly. He is also calm in the car and does well in his crate. Loud bangs or thunder do not bother him. With other dogs, Harry gets along well. He reads their body language well and responds beautifully to it. Cats are currently not his friends, so we prefer to keep that in mind. Harry is a young dog who still has a lot to learn. He can still jump and sometimes nips at hands, arms, or clothes. This seems to be mostly young, enthusiastic puppy behavior, and he responds well to corrections. Walking has improved a lot, but more time and practice are still needed in this area. Because Harry is smart and responds well to guidance, these points are certainly addressable. However, we are looking for adopters who understand that he needs time, structure, and consistent training. For Harry, we are seeking a home where he is helped to grow and settle down. A place where he gets enough exercise, clear boundaries, and mental challenges. In the right environment, Harry can grow into a fantastic, balanced, and loyal family dog. Give Harry the chance to settle down, learn, and continue to bloom.

About Harry

What life with Harry looks like

Harry is a large adult dog waiting at Dierenbescherming Mechelen in Mechelen.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇧🇪Adopting from Belgium

Belgian shelters operate under regional law (Flanders, Wallonia, Brussels each have their own rules). All adoptions include the Eurochip, vaccinations, and a stewardship contract. Several Flemish shelters partner with Dutch and German rescue networks.

Frequently asked

Adopting Harry, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Harry?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dierenbescherming Mechelen handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Harry on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Harry if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Dierenbescherming Mechelen will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Harry already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Harry isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dierenbescherming Mechelen early rather than rehoming privately; they know Harry and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
