Adopt Hearing dogs, una zampa per udire

In our society, people affected by disabilities, physical issues, but also psychological problems have been able to rely for some time on the help provided by dogs carefully selected and trained. Animals used in different contexts and situations, depending on needs and limitations, for example visual, locomotor, or psychological. When talking about service dogs, one immediately thinks of the formidable guide dogs for the blind, along with friendly and playful dogs that participate in pet therapy sessions. Less is spoken about a type of canine assistance that is perhaps still little known in Italy, but no less important: the so-called hearing dogs, dogs that assist people with hearing impairments or who are deaf. Their intervention consists of identifying various types of noise and alerting the person in difficulty, leading them to the source of the sound. This is a fundamental support for these people's daily lives, allowing them to gain confidence and a bit more independence through the ability to hear via their guide's ears and behavior. Hearing dogs undergo a very specific training that enables them to perceive certain acoustic signals, voices, noises, alerts, calls, and recognize where they come from, in order to then alert the owner by touching them with their nose or paw. Like all service dogs, hearing dogs must have particular characteristics that make them suitable for the work. They must be quite reactive to surrounding stimuli at any moment, but also calm enough not to be distracted or frightened by the sounds around them. There is no breed that should be preferred over others or mixed breeds, but the size of the dog is a factor to consider in this case because the guide must be able to move easily around the house - to alert the owner promptly - and also because, not being an officially recognized assistance dog in our country, sometimes it might happen that the dog is not allowed into all public places: a small dog is usually welcomed more willingly than a large or giant breed. In Italy there are very few organizations that deal with hearing dogs: these are associations that train and educate dogs to support various types of disabilities, including deafness. A valid promotion for yet another essential help that a dog can offer to human beings.

Nella nostra società le persone colpite da disabilità, problematiche fisiche ma anche psicologiche possono contare da diverso tempo sull’aiuto fornito da cani opportunamente scelti e addestrati. Animali impiegati in diversi contesti e problematiche, in base a bisogni e impedimenti per esempio di tipo visivo, locomotorio, psichico. Parlando di cani d’assistenza, vengono subito in mente le formidabili guide per non vedenti, insieme ai pazienti e giocosi cani che partecipano alle sedute di pet therapy . Si sente parlare di meno, invece, di una tipologia di aiuto canino ancora forse poco conosciuta in Italia, ma non per questo meno importante: i cosiddetti hearing dogs , i cani che appoggiano le persone ipoacusiche o sorde. Il loro intervento consiste nell’individuare diversi tipi di rumore e segnalarli al proprietario in difficoltà, conducendolo alla sorgente del suono. Si tratta di un sostegno fondamentale per la quotidianità di queste persone, le quali possono acquisire sicurezza e un po’ più di autonomia grazie alla possibilità di sentire attraverso le orecchie e il comportamento della loro guida “acustica”. I cani per non udenti seguono un addestramento molto specifico che li rende capaci di percepire determinati segnali acustici, voci, rumori, avvisi, richiami, e riconoscere da dove provengono, per poter poi avvertire il proprietario con il tocco del muso o della zampa. Come per tutti i cani d’assistenza, anche gli hearing dogs devono possedere peculiari caratteristiche che li rendono adatti al lavoro, devono essere piuttosto reattivi agli stimoli circostanti in qualsiasi momento, ma anche abbastanza calmi da non farsi distrarre o impaurire dall’ambiente sonoro che li circondano. Non esiste una razza da privilegiare rispetto ad altre o ai meticci, ma la taglia del cane risulta in questo caso un fattore da tenere presente in quanto la guida deve essere in grado di muoversi agilmente in casa – per avvertire tempestivamente il proprietario – e anche perché, non essendo un cane d’utilità ancora riconosciuto ufficialmente nel nostro paese, talvolta potrebbe accadere che non gli sia permesso entrare in tutti i luoghi pubblici: un cane piccolo è solitamente accolto più volentieri di una taglia grande o gigante. In italia sono pochissime le realtà di occupano di hearing dogs: si tratta di associazioni che preparano e allenano cani a sostegno di diversi tipi di disabilità tra le quali, appunto, anche la sordità. Una valida promozione per l’ennesimo e indispensabile aiuto che un cane può offrire all’essere umano.
